Job Description
Job Title:
Mechanical Engineer - Rebuild & Service (Roll Grinder Division) Job Description The Rebuild Group within the Roll Grinder Division is seeking a hands-on Mechanical Engineer to support service-focused projects and customer rebuilds. You will spend a significant amount of time in the shop and in the field, working closely with assembly and welding teams and traveling to customer sites to coordinate and execute service activities. This role focuses on troubleshooting and rebuilding heavy industrial machinery rather than new product design and is intended to develop into a future leadership or management position for the right candidate. Responsibilities Support service-focused projects and customer rebuilds for roll grinders and related heavy industrial machinery. Work extensively on the shop floor alongside assembly and welding teams to resolve mechanical issues and ensure high-quality rebuilds. Travel to customer sites across the U.S. (approximately 50% of the time) to perform mechanical troubleshooting, oversee rebuilds, and support service calls. Interpret and work from mechanical drawings to diagnose problems, plan repairs, and verify completed work. Use AutoCAD and/or Inventor to review, modify, and create mechanical designs and documentation as needed for rebuild projects. Perform hands-on mechanical work in both shop and field environments, demonstrating strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills. Coordinate service activities with internal teams and customer contacts to ensure clear communication, accurate scheduling, and effective project execution. Contribute to continuous improvement of rebuild and service processes by identifying issues, proposing solutions, and implementing best practices. Demonstrate leadership potential by taking ownership of projects, mentoring shop personnel informally, and preparing for a future leadership or management role. Essential Skills Bachelor's degree in Engineering. Strong mechanical engineering foundation with demonstrated mechanical aptitude. Experience working in heavy industrial environments and with heavy industrial machines. Proficiency with AutoCAD and/or Inventor for mechanical design and drafting. Ability to read, interpret, and work from detailed mechanical drawings. Hands-on experience with mechanical troubleshooting in shop and field settings. Comfort working closely with assembly and welding teams on the shop floor. Willingness and ability to travel approximately 50% within the United States. Outgoing, personable communication style with clear interest in future leadership or management responsibilities. Ability to work safely and effectively in industrial shop and field environments. Additional Skills & Qualifications Exposure to roll shops, cold mills, or hot mills. Prior experience in the trades or manufacturing before obtaining an engineering degree. Experience supporting service calls and rebuild projects for complex industrial machinery. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build positive working relationships with shop personnel and customers. Demonstrated interest in developing leadership, coordination, and project ownership skills. Work Environment This role offers a dynamic mix of shop-floor and field-based work within a heavy industrial setting. You will regularly work in a rebuild shop environment alongside assembly and welding teams, using tools, equipment, and software such as AutoCAD and Inventor to support mechanical design, troubleshooting, and rebuild activities. Approximately half of your time will involve travel within the United States to customer facilities, where you will work directly on large industrial machines in operational plant environments. The position requires comfort with industrial noise, machinery, and typical safety practices, as well as appropriate work attire suitable for shop and field conditions. The work environment supports hands-on engineering, close collaboration with skilled trades, and opportunities to grow into a leadership or management role over time.
