Role:
Our client is adding a Mechanical Design Engineer to support the design and development of ASME code pressure equipment in a fast-paced, fabrication-driven job-shop. If you're energized by transforming calculations and sketches into shop-ready drawings—and seeing your designs come to life on the floor—this role is for you. A Day in the Life You start your day by reviewing a new shell-and-tube heat exchanger specification. You translate requirements into preliminary calculations, apply ASME Code and TEMA standards, and sketch out a layout with key dimensions. Mid-morning, you walk to the shop, confer with fabrication and production to ensure fixtures, weld details, and tolerances support manufacturability. After lunch, you finalize calculations, issue fabrication drawings and supporting documentation for internal and customer review, then jump into a quick troubleshooting huddle to resolve a fit-up concern. You wrap the day mentoring a junior engineer on design best practices and sharing ideas for continuous improvement around quality and efficiency. What You'll Do Execute mechanical design calculations for pressure-retaining equipment with a focus on heat exchangers. Create and refine engineering drawings, layouts, fabrication details, and dimensional sketches. Design shell-and-tube heat exchangers, pressure vessels, and related ASME equipment. Apply ASME Code, TEMA standards, and customer specifications throughout the design cycle. Release fabrication drawings, calculations, and engineering documentation for review and approval. Partner closely with fabrication, production, and project management to drive manufacturing success. Troubleshoot engineering and fabrication issues as they arise on the shop floor. Champion continuous improvement in quality, efficiency, and manufacturability. Mentor junior engineers as your experience level permits. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field (or equivalent technical education with strong mechanical fundamentals). Background in the heat exchanger industry strongly preferred; shell-and-tube experience is a plus. Familiarity with ASME Code and TEMA standards. Experience in a fabrication-driven or job-shop manufacturing environment preferred. Analytical mindset with strong problem-solving and troubleshooting capability. High attention to detail and dedication to engineering quality. Clear written and verbal communication; professional, reliable, accountable.
