Full-time Mechanical Engineer Position Summary:
The Engineer will perform the detailed design and development of mechanical products/components using Autodesk AutoCAD (2D) and Inventor (3D) software, and in accordance with established company policies, procedures, and objectives. This position will also be responsible for supporting continuous improvement of legacy products and modifying existing products to simplify manufacturing, reduce cost, and support new customer applications. Irwin is seeking an accomplished Engineer to augment our current engineering team and support the engineering and production demands of the Mining and Tunneling Division.
Division Summary:
Irwin Mine and Tunneling Supply (a division of Irwin Car and Equipment) is known around the world for delivering exceptional quality and customized precision in the metal, mining, tunneling, energy, and transportation industries. An engineering and manufacturing company that specializes in designing industry-leading customized industrial material handling equipment and systems that is cost effective without compromising on the rugged quality. Products include belt winders and stands, belt tensioners, mobile tramming equipment, tow tractors, underground utility machines, rock dusting (flame propagation) equipment, hydraulic power units (electric and diesel), and many others. Our manufacturing operations are located at a 90,000 square-foot facility in Irwin, PA (near Pittsburgh), and at our 50,000 square-foot facility in Blairsville, PA. We operate warehouses in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Illinois, Alabama, Utah, and Virginia allowing us to provide fast and convenient service. Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following: Operate reliably and efficiently in a time-sensitive project environment, where typical project lifespan is between 12 and 24 weeks from start to finish. Develop creative mechanical and electro-mechanical design solutions, in accordance with project goals, utilizing concurrent engineering methods to address cost, manufacturability, maintainability, and reliability. Develop submittal packages and approval drawings for mechanical and electro-mechanical systems and products by evaluating and interpreting customer requirements. Produce detailed fabrication drawings of parts, components, and assembly drawings including Bills of Material for release to a production facility. Follow design standards and procedures with little or no supervision. Understand dimensioning, clearances, Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), and perform tolerance stack-up analysis. Facilitate cost effective production and manufacturing efficiency by utilizing standard materials and components whenever possible. Develop operation manuals for projects.
- Support project completion by interfacing with a broad range of departments including sales, purchasing, production, vendors, customers, and upper management.
- Maintain awareness of an assigned project from beginning to end, through all phases of the project lifecycle.
Maintain product design integrity and company reputation by complying with appropriate design codes, government regulations, sound practices, etc. Actively participate in continuous improvement activities to improve Company processes and products. Including Develop/update CAD "best practices" and/or standard work instructions Participate and coordinate in the resolution of quality and production problems, including working directly with outside vendors to assist with design and to obtain part costs. Work on shop floor, customer and vendor sites as required, document all changes, recommend corrective action, and identify improvement opportunities. Provide design support to ensure efficient transition of newly developed products into production status. Produce/support technical documentation (catalogs, manuals, etc.)
Education:
Bachelor's degree (B.A.) in Mechanical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering Technology; or a minimum of five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience with an emphasis in mechanical engineering or design.
Skills/Experience:
- 5+ years of experience in fabrication of heavy industrial equipment
- 5+ years of experience in machine/mechanical design
- Plates, shafts, structural shapes, weldments
- Previous material handling or mining equipment experience is preferred
- Firm grasp of engineering concepts, and experience designing mechanical systems and products
- Excellent math skills: ability to apply advanced mathematical principles and statistics to solve problems
- Experience using CAD software such as Inventor (3D) and AutoCAD (2D), or similar
- Exceptional technical and problem-solving skills and reasoning ability
- Ability to work under pressure
- Must be self-motivated and a great team worker
- Ability to communicate effectively and clearly
- Experience and knowledge in any of the following areas is desirable
- Basic electrical systems (AC & DC) and industrial PLC systems with the ability to design and troubleshoot
- Industrial or mobile hydraulic systems with the ability to design and troubleshoot
- Autodesk Vault (Drawing database management system)
- Ability to review and understand indented bills of materials, plans, prints, and specifications
- Highly organized and able to manage multiple projects simultaneously
- Mechanical aptitude and familiarity with manufacturing processes
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook)
- Ability to work in an office group setting
- Ability to perform Finite Element Analysis (FEA)
