Job Title:
Mechanical Engineer Job Description The Mechanical Engineer designs and develops innovative mechanical and electro-mechanical components and sub-systems for industrial and commercial mobile cleaning robot platforms. You will work as part of a cross-functional development team to create robust designs that meet performance targets, align with product cost objectives, and support project schedules. This role focuses on execution, turning requirements into practical, manufacturable solutions that enable reliable and efficient robotic products. Responsibilities Design and develop mechanical and electro-mechanical components and sub-systems for industrial and commercial mobile cleaning robot platforms. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate product requirements into detailed mechanical designs that meet performance, cost, and schedule objectives. Use CAD tools, with a strong emphasis on SolidWorks, to create 3D models, assemblies, and detailed engineering drawings. Apply mechanical engineering principles to model, predict, and optimize system performance for reliability, durability, and efficiency. Lead or support new product development projects, ensuring mechanical designs integrate effectively with computer-controlled electromechanical systems. Perform tolerance analysis and apply GD&T to ensure proper fit, form, and function of components and assemblies. Conduct and document FMEA to identify, assess, and mitigate risks in mechanical and electro-mechanical designs. Use data-based decision making and statistical analysis to validate design concepts and support engineering decisions. Develop and maintain engineering standards, design guidelines, and best practices for mechanical and electro-mechanical systems. Prepare and review technical documentation, including specifications, reports, and design justifications. Read, analyze, and interpret scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and relevant legal documents to inform design decisions and ensure compliance. Effectively present technical information, design concepts, and project updates to internal stakeholders and external partners. Drive creative and innovative problem solving to address complex mechanical and system-level challenges. Manage ambiguous design tasks as a self-starter, organizing work to meet project milestones and deliverables. Essential Skills Proficiency in mechanical engineering with strong experience in mechanical design for industrial or commercial applications. Hands-on experience with CAD tools, with proficiency in SolidWorks required. Broad technical knowledge in the design and development of mechanical and computer-controlled electromechanical systems. Demonstrated experience in new product development, preferably within an engineering or manufacturing environment. Strong analytical skills with the ability to model and predict system performance based on engineering principles. Proficiency in GD&T and tolerance analysis to ensure precise and reliable component and assembly interfaces. Experience performing and documenting FMEA for mechanical and electro-mechanical systems. Data-based decision making skills, including the use of statistical analysis to support design validation and optimization. Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively present information to a variety of internal and external groups. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Bachelor of Science in Engineering or equivalent degree from an ABET-accredited four-year college or university. Four to eight years of mechanical design engineering experience. Experience with project leadership in engineering or product development settings is preferred. Experience with Six Sigma methodologies. Additional Skills & Qualifications Master of Science in Engineering is preferred. Experience in new product development is strongly preferred, particularly for mechanical and electromechanical systems. Experience leading or contributing to cross-functional engineering projects. Ability to develop and maintain engineering standards and design guidelines. Creative and innovative problem-solving skills for complex mechanical and system-level challenges. Self-starter with the ability to manage ambiguous design tasks and work independently. Ability to effectively collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including electrical, software, and manufacturing engineers. Comfort working with data-driven methodologies, including Six Sigma tools and techniques. Work Environment The role operates in a professional engineering environment focused on the development of industrial and commercial mobile cleaning robot platforms. You will work closely with cross-functional teams in an office and lab setting, using CAD tools such as SolidWorks and other engineering software to design and validate mechanical and electro-mechanical systems. The work involves regular interaction with engineering documentation, technical publications, and project reports, as well as participation in design reviews and technical presentations. The environment encourages innovation, data-driven decision making, and adherence to established engineering standards and processes Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Eden Prairie, MN.
