Job Title:
Project Engineer (Mechanical / Electromechanical) Job Overview We are seeking a highly self‑driven Project Engineer with a strong mechanical focus to own the design, development, and implementation of electromechanical products used in behavioral science research. This is a hands‑on, high‑ownership role for an engineer who thrives in autonomy, takes initiative without direction, and sees projects through from concept to deployment. The primary emphasis of this role is mechanical design, prototyping, testing, and implementation , with secondary responsibility for evaluating electrical components and understanding firmware and software interactions. You will be responsible for developing new products, improving existing designs, and ensuring solutions are manufacturable, reliable, and customer‑ready. This role is ideal for someone who prefers working independently, making design decisions, and driving outcomes , rather than relying on detailed task assignment or constant oversight. Key Responsibilities Own the end‑to‑end mechanical design of products from concept through production. Independently design, prototype, test, and implement mechanical solutions. Select materials, analyze tolerances, and design for manufacturability and assembly. Create, update, and validate CAD models and 2D drawings. Build, assemble, and troubleshoot electromechanical devices. Evaluate electrical components and interfaces and understand firmware/software interactions at a system level. Lead projects with minimal supervision, identifying next steps and driving execution without being directed. Work directly with customers to resolve technical issues and provide advanced support. Travel internationally (Europe) several times per year to install equipment, train users, and perform complex troubleshooting. Collaborate with leadership, manufacturing partners, and internal stakeholders while maintaining ownership of deliverables. Required Qualifications Minimum 5 years of professional experience in mechanical or electromechanical product development. Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related technical field. Strong proficiency in SolidWorks and AutoCAD . Proven ability to design mechanical parts and assemblies independently. Demonstrated experience taking full ownership of projects , from design through implementation. Strong troubleshooting skills for electromechanical systems. Comfortable making technical decisions without relying on step‑by‑step guidance. Excellent communication skills, including direct interaction with customers.Preferred / Additional
Qualifications Experience working in small or fast‑moving engineering teams. Familiarity with electronics, sensors, and basic programming concepts. Experience supporting field installations or customer‑facing technical roles. Strong problem‑solving mindset with the ability to manage multiple priorities. Work Environment & What Makes This Role Different Primarily onsite, with some remote flexibility, especially for early meetings with international clients. High visibility and direct impact on product design and customer outcomes . Small‑company environment with minimal bureaucracy and real ownership. Ideal for engineers who prefer autonomy, accountability, and hands‑on work over highly structured corporate roles. International exposure and travel, including regular collaboration with European customers. Job Type & Location This is a Permanent position based out of Chula Vista, CA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $90000.00 - $115000.00/yr.
