Job Title:
Mechanical Project Engineer Job Description We are seeking a talented Mechanical Project Engineer to design and support industrial boiler systems, steam and condensate return systems, hot water heating systems, and glycol-based cooling systems. This role involves performing load calculations, heat transfer analysis, equipment sizing, and pump and piping design. The engineer will develop PFDs, P&IDs, system layouts, and detailed equipment specifications while assisting in selecting boilers, heat exchangers, pumps, expansion tanks, controls, and related components. The designs must prioritize reliability, serviceability, energy efficiency, and long-term performance. Responsibilities Execute engineering work aligned with project scope, schedule, and budget. Prepare and review equipment specifications and vendor submittals. Provide technical problem-solving and design recommendations. Support installation, commissioning, field testing, and troubleshooting activities. Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams. Ensure compliance with relevant industry standards. Maintain accurate documentation and revision control. Identify opportunities to improve engineering standards and workflows. Essential Skills Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering. 5+ years of experience in mechanical engineering and design. Experience with AutoCAD 2D design. Proficiency in scoping out and designing boiler and chiller systems. Experience with load calculations and heat transfer analysis. Experience in capital equipment and project execution. Strong understanding of steam generation, hydronic heating, and glycol-based systems. Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience in industrial or manufacturing environments preferred. EIT certification preferred; PE license is a plus. Experience with P&ID generation and design. Project management experience. Work Environment The work environment includes a team of 5 Process Engineers. A hybrid schedule is offered, typically allowing for two days of remote work, preferably Tuesday through Thursday. The role requires 40% travel, primarily within the Midwest, with domestic travel ranging from day trips to 3-4 day stays depending on project needs. Travel plans are typically communicated a couple of weeks in advance, but may occasionally require shorter notice. The company has 37 full-time employees, has been in business for 31 years, and consists of core engineering teams across mechanical, process, structural, and electrical disciplines, with a fabrication and installation team under project management. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Madison, WI. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $52.88 - $62.50/hr.
