(Remote) Temporary, Part-time WV LTAP Equipment Operator Trainer - Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering West Virginia University United States, West Virginia, Morgantown Mar 18, 2026 Description The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering in the Benjamin M. Statler College at West Virginia University is currently accepting applications for a (Remote) Temporary, Part-time WV LTAP Equipment Operator Trainer. About the Opportunity The Equipment Operator Trainer supports the mission of the West Virginia Local Technical Assistance Program by delivering handson heavy equipment, load securement, and chainsaw training, to local transportation agencies. This position develops and conducts classroom and field work training, oneonone instruction, and onsite, agencyspecific training focused on safely and effectively operating heavy equipment and other specialized tools used in roadway maintenance and construction. The trainer prepares instructional materials, conducts skill assessments, and provides practical guidance to help agencies improve operator proficiency and workplace safety. Travel is required for this position; thus, a valid driver's license is required. What You'll Do Training Delivery & Instruction Develop, plan, and deliver handson heavy equipment training for operators from local agencies and public service districts.
Conduct group training sessions that bring together participants from multiple agencies.
Provide oneonone instruction tailored to individual operator skill levels and agency needs.
Deliver onsite, agencyspecific training, including equipment evaluations, skill assessments, and operational demonstrations.
Develop and deliver training that emphasizes safe operation, proper maintenance practices, and compliance with state and federal guidelines.
Apply adult learning and training techniques.
Adapt instructional methods to accommodate a wide range of experience levels and learning styles. Class Management & Instructional Preparation Coordinate scheduling and delivery of training, including agency communication, setup, and onsite logistics.
Prepare training materials, demonstrations, and handson exercises that support learning objectives.
Maintain accurate attendance records, evaluations, and documentation for training sessions. Equipment Operation & Demonstration Operate a variety of heavy equipment (e.g., loaders, backhoes, excavators) for instructional and demonstration purposes. Demonstrate proper inspections, safe operating techniques, and best practices for field conditions.
Provide guidance on equipment capabilities, limitations, and appropriate applications for public works operations. Technical Assistance & Agency Support Conduct skill assessments and provide recommendations for operator improvement or additional training Resource Development & Knowledge Sharing Develop instructional materials, checklists, and field guides related to heavy equipment operation and safety.
Contribute content for newsletters, social media, and the LTAP website related to equipment training and best practices.
Identify emerging technologies, equipment innovations, and training opportunities relevant to public works agencies. Program Operations & Support Support multistate or statewide conferences by providing demonstrations, breakout sessions, or handson instruction as needed. General Responsibilities Maintain professional relationships with agency partners and WV LTAP clientele.
Perform other duties as assigned to support LTAP's educational mission.

Approximately 8.5 Months Qualifications High School Diploma or equivalent. A minimum of ten years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, paid employment in heavy equipment operation and instruction, specifically for backhoes, excavators, and loaders. Experience involving: Public speaking. Teaching adult learners. Operating different pieces of heavy equipment. Teaching courses on the safe and proper use of heavy equipment. Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience will be considered. All qualifications must be met by the time of employment. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Ability and knowledge required to build and/or maintain courses related to the proper operation of heavy equipment. Ability to relate to and teach roadway workers who are unaccustomed to being in a classroom, i.e., the appointee must have the appropriate skills to induce learning in non-traditional students, including those who may not have a high school education or who may be illiterate. Must be able to transfer this knowledge in classroom settings and in working with individuals or small groups one-on-one. Must be able to function as a team member.
