About Johnson Controls Johnson Controls, a global leader in thermal management, mission-critical building systems, energy efficiency, and decarbonization, helps customers use energy more productively, reduce carbon emissions, and operate with the precision and resilience required in rapidly expanding industries such as data centers, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, advanced manufacturing, and higher education. For more than 140 years, Johnson Controls has delivered performance where it really matters. Backed by advanced technology, lifecycle services and an industry-leading field organization, we elevate customer performance, turn goals into real-world results and help move society forward. Visit johnsoncontrols.com for more information and follow @Johnsoncontrols on social platforms. What you will do Thermal limits are the hidden bottleneck holding back the world's most advanced technologies—AI infrastructure, semiconductor equipment, power electronics, and mission-critical defense systems. At Johnson Controls, we don't work around those limits—we eliminate them. Powered by our breakthrough Stack Forging™ process, we engineer high-performance thermal components and integrated cooling loop solutions designed for direct deployment into AI, HPC, and other demanding environments.
The result:
a best-in-class thermal management platform built for the systems that push performance to the edge—and beyond. Join the movement as a Builder on the Stack Forging Thermal Solutions team at Johnson Controls, as a Thermal Simulation Engineer located in Burlington, MA. In this role, you won't just analyze performance—you'll help unlock it. Using a blend of first-principles calculations and advanced computational tools, you'll predict and elevate the performance of JCI's industry-leading thermal management technologies. Working side-by-side with Solutions Engineers and Thermal Design Engineers, you'll tackle complex challenges and optimize designs to meet some of the most demanding customer requirements in the industry. You'll also play a key role in strengthening and evolving our simulation best practices, while learning from and collaborating with a team of top-tier simulation experts. You bring precision, curiosity, and a drive to get it right. You thrive on turning new and complex designs into accurate, actionable insights. With experience in coupled thermo-fluid simulations, you know how to translate detailed analysis into clear, impactful results for engineering teams. Comfortable navigating across projects, technologies, and functions, you're at your best when collaborating in a fast-moving, cross-functional environment. This position requires an onsite presence 4 days a week, with an option to work remotely 1 day a week. Candidates must be commuting distance to the facility, or able to relocate. Only US citizens and/or Permanent Residents of the US will be considered, as sponsorship is not available for this position. How you will do it Do hand calculations, select appropriate correlation coefficients, and build simple scaling models Perform coupled thermo-fluid simulations using CFD software to predict pressure drop and thermal performance Provide guidance and input on customer development projects Develop and improve best practices around simulation What you will need Required Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or other relevant field 3+ years of industry experience Experience with CFD simulation software Experience in thermal-fluid simulation and analysis, including but not limited to comfort with selecting turbulence closures, running mesh refinement studies, estimating model error, and extracting dimensionless correlation coefficients from simulations Preferred Experience with Siemens SimCenter Experience with a wide range of reference literature on calculating thermal and fluid behavior of components Ability to deliver results in a quickly evolving environment, delivering estimates for thermal performance of a design within a few days to accelerate customer-facing projects Familiarity with design engineering work, specifically, an understanding of what an engineering design process looks like and how their work informs that process
