Job Title:
Mechanical Designer Job Description This long-term, full-time Mechanical Designer role supports product development for advanced lighting sources within the smart building technologies domain. You will take mechanical designs from concept through production, focusing on sheet metal and injection-molded plastic parts, while collaborating closely with engineers. The position is ideal for a hands-on designer who enjoys owning smaller assemblies from initial design through validation and contributing to more complex systems as part of a collaborative team. Responsibilities Collaborate with engineering teams to develop mechanical designs from initial concept through production release. Create complex 3D CAD models using Creo as the primary tool and SolidWorks as a secondary tool. Translate engineering requirements into manufacturable mechanical designs that meet performance and quality targets. Design and develop sheet metal components, injection-molded plastic parts, and basic electronic packaging solutions. Own and execute the complete design of simple assemblies consisting of approximately 5-8 components. Develop detailed part and assembly designs, including material selection, engineering drawings, and tolerance analysis. Conduct peer reviews of mechanical designs and support design revisions based on feedback and test results. Support prototype development, including identifying suppliers, sourcing parts, and coordinating validation activities. Build prototypes and test setups using basic shop and hand tools to evaluate design performance. Partner with engineers on higher-complexity designs, providing mechanical design expertise and CAD support. Collaborate with vendors and suppliers to ensure designs are feasible, manufacturable, and aligned with cost and quality goals. Contribute to continuous improvement of design processes, documentation, and standards within the mechanical design function. Essential Skills Associate degree (2-year) in Mechanical Design, Engineering Technology, or a related field. Experience in mechanical design across the full product lifecycle, from concept through production. Proficiency in Creo or SolidWorks, with a willingness to learn and primarily use Creo. Hands-on experience with 3D modeling for mechanical components and assemblies. Experience designing sheet metal parts and assemblies. Experience designing injection-molded plastic components. Ability to collaborate effectively with engineers on complex mechanical designs. Basic hands-on mechanical capabilities, including use of shop and hand tools for building prototypes and test setups. Strong problem-solving skills with a detail-oriented approach to design and documentation. Ability to translate engineering requirements into manufacturable designs that meet functional and quality objectives. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience with Windchill or similar Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems. Experience with electronics packaging design. Experience working directly with vendors and suppliers on mechanical components. Ability to lead small teams on defined projects or subassemblies. Experience seeing products through to production, including design validation and release. Familiarity with manufacturing processes such as sheet metal fabrication, injection molding, machining, and 3D printing. Interest in smart building technologies and advanced lighting solutions. Strong communication skills to participate in peer reviews and cross-functional collaboration. Work Environment This role is fully onsite at the client's facility, working closely with engineers, designers, and other technical staff in a collaborative product development environment. You will use Creo as the primary CAD tool, with SolidWorks as a secondary tool, and manage design data through Windchill PLM. The work involves regular interaction with manufacturing processes such as sheet metal fabrication, injection molding, machining, and 3D printing, as well as hands-on prototype building in a shop or lab setting. The position offers a long-term engagement with enhanced benefits, including two weeks of paid time off and eight company holidays, supporting a stable and engaging work experience focused on innovation in advanced lighting and smart building technologies. #ACTservices26 Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Austin, TX.
