reviews $80,000•$85,000 a year•Full-time Precision Group, a 41-year old manufacturer of plastic injection molds and products, is now hiring a Tooling Design Engineer with at least 5 years of experience . The Tooling Design Engineer is responsible for the design, development, validation and continuous improvement of plastic injection molds, tooling systems, and manufacturing fixtures. This role works closely with customers, project managers, moldmakers, process engineers, and production teams to ensure tooling solutions meet quality, cost and production requirements while supporting successful product launches. Requires 4 years college Engineering degree. Mechanical Engineering is a plus. Due to job costing this position is at an hourly rate with a minimum rate of $38.47 per hour and maximum rate of $40.87 per hour with overtime hours available. A strong work ethic is a quality we look for and being a team player. Drug test is required.
Tool design experience preferred supporting:
Medical devices, electronics, automotive, consumer products, industrial products and ISO 9001 and
ISO 13485
is highly desirable.
Key Responsibilities:
Design plastic injection molds for complex and high-precision components. Develop 3D models and detailed manufacturing drawings using CAD software. Perform mold flow analysis and design optimization to improve part quality and manufacturability.
Design tooling components including:
Core and cavity inserts, hot runner systems, cooling circuits, ejection systems, slides and lifters, unscrewing mechanisms, fixtures and assembly tooling. Participate in Design for Manufacturing (DFM) reviews with customers and internal teams. Support tooling quotations by providing technical input and risk assessments. Collaborate with mold makers during tooling fabrication and debugging phases. Conduct design reviews and implement engineering changes. Troubleshoot tooling-related issues and recommend corrective actions. Ensure designs comply with customer specifications, industry standards, and internal best practices. Support validation activities including
IQ/OQ/PQ
when required for regulated industries. Maintain project documentation, engineering records, and revision controls.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
Strong understanding of plastic injection molding processes. Experience designing multi-cavity and family molds. Knowledge of engineering polymers, shrink rates, and material behavior. Experience with hot runner systems from suppliers such as Mold-Masters, Husky, Synventive and Incoe. Understanding of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T), mold cooling optimization, draft analysis, parting line development, steel selection, venting strategies, and surface finishes and texturing.
Familiarity with mold manufacturing processes:
CNC machining, EDM, Wire EDM, grinding, polishing, and laser welding. Experience with mold qualification and validation processes. Software Requirements Advanced proficiency in one or more CAD platforms: SolidWorks, Autodesk Inventor, or Siemens NX Experience with Mold Design modules. Moldflow simulation experience preferred. Familiarity with CAM software is a plus.
