Job Description

POSITION OVERVIEW
This role is responsible for developing and refining 3D tooling designs based on customer-supplied CAD data, applying casting and manufacturing best practices to support mold and core production. The position works closely with engineering and shop teams to ensure tooling designs are functional, manufacturable, and aligned with production requirements. You will play a key role in translating part designs into tooling concepts, supporting both new builds and modifications, while contributing to efficient and accurate tooling execution.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Interpret customer CAD files and create or revise 3D tooling models for mold and core production Collaborate with tooling and process engineers to define tooling layouts, configurations, and build approaches Develop multi-impression tooling designs based on project requirements Design core components, including print geometry, to meet casting specifications Support the design of robotic end-of-arm tooling used in automated handling processes Partner with pattern shop personnel to evaluate tooling adjustments and improvements Prepare detailed build and assembly drawings for manufacturing teams Assist in transferring design data to CAM systems for CNC programming and machining Coordinate material needs and support procurement for tooling builds
EXPERIENCE & BACKGROUND
Minimum 5 years of experience in tooling design, machining, or a related manufacturing environment Strong familiarity with CNC machining processes and tooling applications Experience working with 3D CAD platforms (solid modeling and/or surface modeling preferred) Background in foundry, casting, or similar heavy manufacturing environments is highly valued
CORE SKILLS & COMPETENCIES
Ability to convert 2D drawings into accurate 3D models Knowledge of shrink factors, draft angles, offsets, and parting strategies in tooling design Strong attention to detail when comparing models against print specifications Understanding of mold pattern construction, core setting equipment, and related systems Proficient in blueprint reading and interpretation Effective communication skills, both written and verbal Strong problem-solving mindset with the ability to troubleshoot design and build challenges Ability to handle physical requirements of the role, including lifting up to 50 lbs
LEADERSHIP & PROJECT OWNERSHIP
Manage assigned tooling projects from design through completion Provide guidance and technical support during tooling builds Assist in training or mentoring team members as needed
TOOLS & EQUIPMENT CAD
software (such as PowerShape or similar platforms) CNC machining centers and associated programming interfaces Manual machining equipment (mills, lathes, drill presses) Standard shop tools and lifting equipment (hoists, forklifts)
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Team-oriented manufacturing setting with close collaboration between engineering and production Hands-on involvement in both design and shop floor support
