Job Description

Overview:
General Dynamics Electric Boat, the nation's premier designer and builder of nuclear submarines, is seeking an I llustrator to join our team. This position entails working with a small team of illustrators supporting approximately 60 writers and editors assigned to develop, update, and issue component and ship system technical manuals. The Illustrator must be able to prepare high quality illustrations for technical manuals and maintenance documents using computer graphic software and established management systems to store and retrieve illustrations. Applicant must be able to utilize engineering drawings, schematics, and other pertinent information to determine which component views (complete assembly, exploded view, or cutaway) will give the greatest clarity and be most effective to the end user. Ability to translate engineering drawings and documents into exploded illustrations is required. Must be able to prepare to functional clarity illustrations, schematics, and wiring diagrams of complex electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic systems where layout and arrangement details are essential. Must ensure that the final product meets customer technical requirements and are in accordance with military specifications. The ideal candidate is detail oriented with skills in design, balance, drawing, and Information Technology. Excellent communication skills, organizational skills, and proven ability to work in a team environment are needed. Knowledge of printer and plotter capabilities with respect to drawing files such as JPEG and TIF files to ensure quality of the final product is a plus.
Qualifications:
Required:
High school diploma or GED Trade or technical schooling in drafting (2 to 5 years of experience in the preparation of technical illustrations may be substituted for formal education) Working knowledge of typical graphic software and capable of using
Adobe Photoshop, Canvas, Corel Draw, and AutoCAD Preferred:
Knowledge and ability to work in Team Center and proficiency using VISIO software Technical illustration certification 2 or more years in technical design position
