Job Description
Designer - HVAC & Process PipingPosition Overview We are seeking a detail-oriented Designer specializing in HVAC and process piping to join our mechanical design team. The role focuses on developing coordinated design and construction documents, BIM/Revit models, and practical solutions for commercial and industrial projects. The ideal candidate will collaborate closely with engineers, construction teams, and other design disciplines to deliver efficient, code-compliant HVAC and piping systems from concept through construction support.
Key ResponsibilitiesDevelop and produce detailed HVAC and process piping design drawings, schematics, and specifications for commercial and industrial projects.
Create and maintain 3D BIM/Revit models for HVAC and piping systems, ensuring accurate component placement and system routing.
Coordinate with mechanical engineers, structural and electrical disciplines, and contractors to resolve spatial conflicts and complete coordinated construction documents.
Perform system layout, equipment selection, duct and pipe sizing, and basic load or flow calculations in accordance with applicable standards and codes.
Prepare shop drawings, isometrics, and fabrication-level documentation for piping systems and HVAC assemblies.
Run clash detection and participate in model coordination sessions using Navisworks or similar tools; implement required model revisions.
Provide construction support, respond to RFIs, and assist with site visits and field coordination as required.
Participate in project reviews, quality control checks, and ensure deliverables meet project schedules and client requirements.
QualificationsDiploma or degree in Mechanical Engineering, HVAC Technology, or related discipline.3+ years of practical experience in HVAC and process piping design for commercial or industrial projects (oil & gas, chemical, food processing, etc. a plus).Proficiency in Revit (BIM) for mechanical systems; strong working knowledge of AutoCAD. Experience with Navisworks or similar clash-detection tools is preferred.
Solid understanding of duct and pipe sizing, equipment selection, airflow and hydronic fundamentals, and relevant codes/standards (SMACNA, ASHRAE, ASME, ANSI, local codes).Experience preparing shop drawings, isometrics, and fabrication details for piping systems; familiarity with process piping specifications and materials.
Construction experience or demonstrated understanding of site installation practices and coordination with contractors.
Strong communication and collaboration skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
Professional certifications (EIT, CEM) or registration (P.Eng) and experience with piping stress analysis tools are a plus.
