Job Title:
Mechanical Designer Job Description The Mechanical Designer will create detailed 3D models and assembly drawings using Solidworks, with a primary focus on the design and development of complete chassis systems, chassis components, chassis cabs, and other mechanical parts. The role requires strong mechanical design expertise, advanced 3D solid modeling skills, and close collaboration with the shop floor to verify fit and function and ensure designs translate accurately into physical components. Accuracy, timeliness, and adherence to project requirements are critical to the success of this position. Responsibilities Design and develop complete chassis systems, chassis components, chassis cabs, and various mechanical parts using Solidworks 3D. Create detailed 3D models, assemblies, and production-ready drawings that meet project specifications and standards. Apply GD&T principles to ensure proper dimensioning, tolerancing, and functional relationships between components. Design sheet metal components and assemblies suitable for manufacturing and assembly processes. Collaborate closely with shop floor personnel to verify fit, form, and function of designed parts and assemblies. Troubleshoot design and manufacturing issues by reviewing physical components and making necessary design adjustments. Ensure all designs are accurate, complete, and delivered on time to meet critical project milestones. Work alongside other mechanical and electrical designers, functional leads, and mentors to align design work with overall project objectives. Support the creation and maintenance of bills of material (BOM) for designed components and assemblies, as needed. Incorporate feedback from cross-functional teams to continuously improve designs and support ongoing project phases. Essential Skills Strong mechanical design with experience in complex mechanical systems. Expertise in Solidworks 3D for part, assembly, and drawing creation. Sheet metal design experience for manufacturable components and assemblies. Proficiency in applying Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) to drawings. Ability to interpret and produce detailed mechanical drawings and documentation. Strong attention to detail to ensure accuracy and completeness of designs. Ability to collaborate effectively with engineering teams and shop floor personnel. Additional Skills & Qualifications Certified SolidWorks Professional (CSWP) or equivalent proficiency is highly beneficial. Experience creating and managing bills of material (BOM). Familiarity with air and hydraulic schematics. Experience in heavy truck or transportation chassis design. Ability to work effectively within a multi-disciplinary team of mechanical and electrical designers. Willingness to learn from functional leads and mentors and adapt to project needs. Work Environment The Mechanical Designer will work in an engineering building alongside a team of approximately 12 designers, including both mechanical and electrical disciplines, and will collaborate closely with functional leads and mentors. The role is primarily office-based, working at a cubicle on design tasks, with regular interaction on the shop floor to review components, verify that everything looks correct, and troubleshoot issues. The broader environment focuses on custom fire apparatus, heavy truck chassis, custom vehicles, and truck bodies. The standard work schedule is Monday through Thursday, 6:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with some periods of required overtime on Fridays. Overtime is compensated at 1.5 times the regular pay rate. The assignment offers one week of vacation every six months on assignment, in addition to six major holidays, and the contract has the potential to extend through multiple project phases. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Charlotte, MI. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $35.00 - $45.00/hr.
