Job Description:
Under the direction of the Project Manager or Project Engineer, the Mechanical Designer designs and drafts mechanical and/or electro-mechanical sub-assemblies used in the thermal processing of specialty materials. Job Responsibilities
  • Works independently or collaboratively to develop design concepts, detailed designs, and detailed fabrication drawings that fulfill contractual obligations, projects schedules, and company goals.
  • Collaborates with and delegates to internal and external partners during the design, drafting, and manufacturing phase.
  • Checks design and drafting work prior to Project Engineer approval to ensure requirements are satisfied.
  • Works closely with the Project Engineer to solve problems that may arise during any phase of the project.
  • Responsible for implementations and follow-up of his/her portion of the project after the Project Engineer establishes a course of action to solve a particular problem.
  • Performs a substantial amount of 3D CAD modeling and 2D detailing work for individual parts and assemblies.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Working knowledge of design practices as relates to vacuum vessels or systems.
  • Strong working knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing.
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing concepts used in the fabrication and assembly of industrial assemblies, weldments, and detail parts.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, project requirements documents, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
  • Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
  • Strong working knowledge of CAD software e.g., Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD Mechanical, Mechanical Desktop, and similar CAD platforms.
  • Working knowledge of Product Data Management software (e.g. Autodesk Vault, SolidWorks PDM).
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products.
Education and Experience:
  • Associate's degree (AA) or equivalent from two-year College, but 4 years preferred.
  • 2-5 years of experience in a Designer or Drafter role at minimum.
