What to Expect Tesla's Cell Engineering team at San Diego is looking for an exceptional talent as a Mechatronics Engineer, to lead and develop next generation prototype manufacturing capabilities. This role includes design and implementation of automated equipment in processes and advanced manufacturing, including building up and commissioning key equipment. Key equipment will include but not limited to winding, welding, electrolyte filling, test automation, and customized retrofits. This is an exciting opportunity to build cutting-edge manufacturing capabilities right here in San Diego. Tesla is a demanding and fast-paced environment where you will work on mission-driven manufacturing capabilities to enable incredibly exciting battery products. What You'll Do
Drive development of innovative manufacturing processes and equipment that enable improved battery performance and cost
Lead equipment retrofits and upgrades, especially with hands-on experience
Design robust, stable, fault-tolerant systems with error handling and recovery
Program and debug structure text and ladder logic code on multiple PLC controller platforms (Siemens, Beckhoff, B&R, Omron)
Use Python scripting and SQL to interface equipment to collect data into dashboard databases
Create intuitive operator touchscreen interfaces using WinCC/MappView/TwinCAT HMI and SCADA dashboards screens using Ignition, Grafana
Set up and tune servo drives and VFDs for fast and smooth operation (Schneider, B&R, Beckhoff, Siemens, SEW)
Design and implement control reliable safety systems for safeguarding robots, gantries, conveyors, and other high-volume manufacturing equipment as per codes and standards
Manage suppliers during specification, design, buyoff and installation of automated manufacturing equipment
Build process documentation to accurately define the process to cross-functional teams (equipment, quality, production, etc.) What You'll Bring
Degree in an Engineering discipline (Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering Controls and Computer Control Systems, Computer Science, Mechatronic Engineering, Automation Engineering, etc.), or equivalent experience
5+ years of experience as a hands-on mechanical/manufacturing controls engineer working on automation and/or electromechanical systems
Advanced proficiency in programming industrial equipment in all
IEC 61131-3
languages with a focus on structured text and ladder logic
Safety PLCs (Allen Bradley, Omron, Pilz, Siemens, B&R, etc.)
Human Machine Interface (HMI / GUI - AB Panelview, Ignition, TIA/WinCC, B&R, etc.)
Field bus Networks (EtherCAT, ProfiNet, ProfiBud, Modbus, Powerlink, RS232, etc.) and OPC UA PLCs, SCADA, MES, and other systems
Proficiency in selecting/ integrating appropriate circuit protectors, wire and cable, sensors, safety hardware, PLC hardware, remote I/O, VFD, and servo systems
Ability to collaborate effectively across multiple cross-functional teams and suppliers
Evidence of Deep understanding of engineering fundamentals and ability to apply them towards manufacturing process development Compensation and Benefits

Expected Compensation
$91,960 - $159,600/annual salary + cash and stock awards + benefits Pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements dependent on the position offered.
