Job Description
Position Summary We are seeking a highly motivated Mining Engineer to support underground mining and tunneling projects for a mining contractor. This role combines field engineering, mine planning, project coordination, cost estimating, blasting support, underground surveying, and geotechnical monitoring. The successful candidate will work closely with operations, maintenance, project management, and client representatives to safely and efficiently execute underground construction and mining projects. Key Responsibilities Engineering & Project Support Provide engineering support and technical coordination for underground mining and tunneling projects. Prepare and revise mine and tunnel layouts using AutoCAD and related engineering software. Assist with project implementation, scheduling, logistics, procurement, and documentation. Support development and maintenance of resource-loaded project schedules. Cost Estimating & Planning Prepare quantity takeoffs and cost estimates from plans and specifications. Obtain pricing from vendors and subcontractors. Develop labor productivity analyses and equipment cycle time studies. Assist in preparation of project bids and change estimates. Field Engineering Perform underground mapping and logging of rock conditions. Support QA/QC testing and documentation. Measure and calculate production quantities. Coordinate with client representatives and field crews to ensure compliance with project requirements. Underground Operations Support Develop and revise drill and blast plans and related technical submittals. Conduct underground surveying and layout for advancing development headings. Install and monitor geotechnical instrumentation. Support ventilation, pumping, and underground infrastructure planning. Safety & Leadership Promote a strong safety culture and safe production practices. Identify, assess, and mitigate underground hazards. Assist in supervising crews and coordinating field activities. Maintain accurate daily reports and project records. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Mining Engineering, Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Geological Engineering, or a related discipline. Professional Engineer (PE) registration preferred. Experience in underground mining, tunneling, or heavy civil construction preferred. Strong understanding of underground mining methods, geology, rock mechanics, and ground support systems. Required Skills Advanced AutoCAD and 3D modeling skills. Experience with mine planning, geological, or geotechnical software is an asset. Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities. Effective written and verbal communication skills. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook). Ability to work collaboratively in fast-paced field environments. Spanish language skills are considered an asset. Working Conditions Work will be performed in active underground mine and tunnel environments. Must be comfortable working in dusty, noisy, wet, uneven, and confined conditions. Ability to climb ladders, navigate rough terrain, and work around heavy equipment is required. Position may require night shifts, weekends, and extended project schedules. Physical Requirements Ability to stand, walk, climb, kneel, crouch, and crawl for extended periods. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs regularly and up to 75 lbs occasionally. Must possess adequate vision, hearing, and physical mobility for underground operations. Additional Requirements Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record. Ability to maintain BATFE Employee Possessor clearance for explosives handling. Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
