Job DescriptionWe have multiple openings for a Group Leader in the Superblock & Nevada Engineering Section with responsibilities for leading groups of engineers, business analysts, risk managers, and document specialists to support the Superblock, a DOE Hazard Category 2 nuclear facility. The Groups in the Superblock & Nevada Engineering Section develop requirements specifications, system designs and architectures, detailed component designs, and manage the integration of systems, risk management, and operations for nuclear materials and nuclear facility applications in support of Strategic Deterrence (SD). As a line supervisor, your responsibilities will complement your assigned programmatic activities. You will work with program leadership to develop a broad range of technical staff, including identifying current engineering capability gaps within the Superblock organization and developing staff to meet these needs. This position is in the Defense Technologies Engineering Division (DTED), within the Engineering Directorate.
Depending on your assignment, this position may offer a hybrid schedule, blending in-person and virtual presence. You may have the flexibility to work from home one or more days per week. These positions will be filled at either level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.
In this role you willProvide technical and operational leadership, supervision, mentoring and technical guidance to effectively develop and manage a team. Responsible for high-level goal setting, strategic planning, and capability development to ensure project/program goals and objectives are accomplished.
Lead, participate in, and/or coordinate recruiting, hiring, training, career development, and performance management activities as needed to meet programmatic staffing, employee development, and performance related and salary management needs, including providing career counseling, mentoring, and technical guidance. Participate in performance reviews and salary management processes.
Provide technical, safety, and security leadership to group personnel and activities and collaborate with project principals and group personnel in defining employee work assignments.
Exercise advanced level skills in the application and development of complex nuclear materials and nuclear facility engineering industry best practices, and/or business principles, theories, concepts, and techniques.
Develop and maintain effective relationships with corresponding program leaders to assist in the achievement of program goals. Foster and ensure DTED's mission, vision, and values through effective leadership.
Lead and engage in thoughtful engineering peer reviews and design reviews to ensure the technical excellence of our designs and our workforce.
Monitor performance required to meet programmatic milestones and deliverables and lead corrective actions where necessary.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Additional job responsibilities, at the SEL.5 levelServe as subject matter expert (SME) in nuclear materials and nuclear facility engineering at meetings, briefings, design reviews, and committee activities both internal and external to the Laboratory. Serve as an organization spokesperson and senior technical expert for Laboratory management and/or as an external advisor for customers and sponsors, including serving on scientific or technical committees and positively representing the program and the Laboratory.
Using creativity and innovation, champion and lead the application and development of principles, theories, and concepts related to nuclear materials and nuclear facility engineering.
Lead and influence high-level goal setting and strategic plans to achieve objectives and provide strategic technical advice to management and external customers.
Mentor staff across the organization, including other mentors.
QualificationsThese positions require an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance at the time of hire.
Bachelor's degree in an Engineering field such as Mechanical, Structural, Electrical or Civil Engineering or related technical field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
Significant engineering experience effectively building, motivating, and leading multi-disciplinary teams of technical and scientific staff.
Subject matter expert knowledge of nuclear facilities and operations in a high hazard environment and governing regulatory requirements.
Significant experience providing technical leadership, guidance, counseling, and project management while working in a multidisciplinary team environment. Significant experience developing and implementing creative solutions to a diverse range of highly complex technical problems.
Expert level communication, facilitation, collaboration, and interpersonal skills necessary to lead a team, to present, explain, influence and advise senior management, programmatic organizations, and/or sponsors both internal and external to the Laboratory, and to interpret and convey Laboratory policies to employees.
Highly effective leadership, interpersonal skills, and supervisory skills to lead personnel, write performance appraisals, and able to actively participate in ranking sessions.
Additional qualifications at the SEL.5 levelExpert knowledge of, and extensive experience in utilizing systems engineering principles and tools for program execution, including defining, developing, and executing nuclear materials and nuclear facility processes.
Extensive experience and expert technical knowledge to address advancements that may have impact beyond the Laboratory.
Extensive experience in the leadership of personnel for technical projects, including establishing staffing pipelines and technical mentorship across a broad range of activities.
Qualifications We DesireMaster's degree or PhD in engineering or a related technical field.
Broad knowledge of Laboratory policies and practices and applicable NNSA orders.
Experience working in nuclear facilities and extensive understanding of operations in a high hazard environment and governing regulatory requirements.
