Optical Engineer (Hands-On Lab & Systems Build) Tucson, AZ (Onsite) Aerospace / Space Systems | Adaptive Optics About the Role We are a growing, innovative small business developing advanced adaptive optics systems and optical instrumentation for applications in astronomy, laser communications, and government programs. We are seeking a hands-on Optical Engineer who enjoys building and working directly with hardware. This role is ideal for someone who wants to move beyond purely theoretical or design work and play a key role in assembling, aligning, testing, and deploying optical systems . This position is heavily focused on lab work and system build-out . Optical design responsibilities may grow over time, but the immediate need is for someone who can take ownership of hardware development and execution . Candidates from aerospace and defense environments who are interested in joining a smaller, agile organization where they can have a larger impact are strongly encouraged to apply. What You'll Do Build, assemble, align, and test optical systems and instrumentation Perform optical alignment and validation at component, subsystem, and full-system levels Support the full lifecycle of systems—from concept through build, test, and deployment Analyze optical performance (wavefront error, stray light, tolerancing) using tools like Zemax Assist with installation, commissioning, and upgrades at customer sites (~10% travel) Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams (optical, mechanical, software) Create and maintain technical documentation, procedures, and reports Identify and source optical components; work directly with vendors Participate in customer meetings, presentations, and technical briefings What We're Looking For BS in Optical Engineering, Optical Sciences, or related field (MS preferred) Hands-on experience assembling and aligning complex optical systems Strong understanding of optical theory and practical application Experience using optical design/analysis tools (e.g., Zemax ) Ability to work independently after training; self-starter with strong initiative Willingness to travel up to ~10% U.S. Citizenship required Ability to pass a background check Preferred Qualifications Experience with adaptive optics systems Background in laser communications or laser-based systems Experience with interferometers, autocollimators, and alignment telescopes Active U.S. security clearance What Success Looks Like Ability to build and deploy systems with minimal oversight after ramp-up Strong hands-on troubleshooting and problem-solving skills Desire to grow technically and take on increasing responsibility Motivated, proactive mindset with a passion for building cutting-edge hardware Additional Information This is a fully onsite position in Tucson, AZ Candidates should have a strong, stable work history and professional/managerial references Interview process includes a Teams interview followed by an onsite interview #GRP2 Equal Opportunity Employer/Veterans/Disabled Benefit offerings include medical, dental, vision, term life insurance, short-term disability insurance, additional voluntary benefits, commuter benefits and 401K plan.
