Job Description

Job Title Distribution Engineer Job Description The Distribution Engineer designs, plans, and manages electrical distribution systems that deliver power to residential, commercial, and industrial customers. This role ensures the safe, reliable, and efficient distribution of electrical power by developing robust system designs, performing detailed network analyses, and supporting both new and existing infrastructure. The engineer collaborates with cross-functional teams and regulatory bodies to maintain compliance with industry standards while driving continuous improvement in reliability, safety, and system performance. Responsibilities + Design, plan, and optimize electrical distribution systems, including overhead and underground lines, substations, transformers, and related components. + Ensure all distribution system designs comply with applicable industry standards, regulations, environmental requirements, and safety codes. + Perform load flow analysis, fault analysis, and voltage drop calculations to assess distribution network capacity and performance. + Identify and mitigate potential issues in the distribution network through detailed network analysis and modeling. + Maintain accurate records of distribution equipment and assets, including condition assessments and lifecycle documentation. + Recommend maintenance, repair, or replacement strategies for aging or damaged distribution assets to support long-term system reliability. + Specify and select distribution equipment such as transformers, circuit breakers, switches, and protective devices based on voltage levels, load requirements, and system conditions. + Collaborate with regulatory authorities to obtain approvals and ensure ongoing compliance with relevant codes and regulations. + Identify opportunities to improve system reliability, reduce downtime, and enhance power quality across the distribution network. + Develop and implement strategies to increase system resilience and support stable power delivery under varying operating conditions. + Evaluate requests for new electrical connections and assess their impact on the existing distribution network. + Design and plan the necessary infrastructure to support new customers and load growth while maintaining system performance and reliability. + Manage distribution infrastructure projects from concept through completion, including planning, scheduling, and execution oversight. + Coordinate with construction crews, contractors, vendors, and internal teams to ensure projects meet timelines, budgets, and quality expectations. + Respond to emergency situations such as power outages and equipment failures by conducting rapid assessments and developing safe, effective restoration plans. + Support field and storm duty operations as needed to help restore power and stabilize the distribution system during adverse events. + Analyze data from monitoring systems, smart grids, and sensors to gain insights into system performance and asset health. + Use data-driven approaches to diagnose issues, optimize network operations, and inform future design and investment decisions. + Communicate technical information clearly to internal stakeholders, contractors, and regulatory bodies, ensuring alignment on project goals and system changes. + Stay current with emerging technologies, industry trends, and evolving energy demands to continuously improve distribution system design and operation. Essential Skills + Demonstrated experience in power distribution, electrical design, power delivery, and distribution design. + Strong proficiency in distribution system design software and power system simulation tools. + Proficiency with computer-aided design (CAD) tools, with specific experience in AutoCAD. + Experience using GIS (Geographic Information Systems) for distribution planning and asset management. + Knowledge of substation design principles and components within distribution systems. + Ability to perform load flow, fault, and voltage drop analyses for distribution networks. + In-depth knowledge of electrical distribution principles, grid operations, protection systems, and related equipment. + Strong understanding of regulatory requirements, industry standards, and environmental regulations relevant to electrical distribution. + Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills for assessing network performance and diagnosing complex technical issues. + Strong commitment to safety protocols and procedures in the design, operation, and maintenance of electrical distribution systems. + Effective project management skills, including planning, organizing, and overseeing distribution infrastructure projects. + Excellent written and verbal communication skills for collaboration with cross-functional teams, contractors, and regulatory bodies. + Ability to adapt to new technologies, evolving industry trends, and changing energy demands in the electrical distribution sector. Additional Skills & Qualifications + Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related field is typically required. + A master's degree in electrical engineering or a related discipline may be preferred for more specialized roles. + Candidates with extensive relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a formal degree, depending on overall qualifications. + Professional engineering license (PE) or similar professional certification, as required or preferred by regional regulations. + Experience with environmental regulations as they apply to electrical distribution design and construction. + Prior power distribution experience is preferred, including exposure to both overhead and underground systems. + Familiarity with smart grid technologies, monitoring systems, and sensor-based data collection is beneficial. + Demonstrated ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams and coordinate with external partners and stakeholders. Work Environment This role is primarily in-office, with most design, planning, and analysis work performed in a professional office environment using design software, CAD tools, GIS platforms, and power system simulation software. The position also includes some field work, which may involve site visits to substations, overhead and underground distribution lines, and other facilities to support inspections, project execution, and asset assessments. The engineer may participate in storm duty or emergency response activities, which can require working in outdoor conditions and non-standard hours to support power restoration. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Pelham, AL. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $35.00 - $44.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
