DESCRIPTION
Under general supervision, to maintain and repair building and facilities systems and equipment, including but not limited to, electric systems, steam systems, water and sewage systems, electronic alarm and building operations systems of medical institutions, detention facilities and other public buildings; and to do related work as required.DISTINGUISHING FEATURES
Positions in this class are at the journey level. Incumbents report to a Supervisor, Buildings and Plant Maintenance . A Stationary Engineer is not required to do extensive supervision or job planning, such as is required of positions in the higher class of Supervisor, Buildings and Plant Maintenance, but must be able to perform assigned repair, maintenance or installation jobs with general supervision.EXAMPLES OF DUTIES NOTE
The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed. 1. Operate, test, install, repair and perform corrective and preventive maintenance on: mechanical equipment and systems; plumbing systems and components; electrical, electronic, alarm and computer controlled systems; emergency generators and components, fire alarm systems and medical gas systems. 2. Fabricate, install, and repair various metal/sheet metal objects and perform general machine shop work using proper techniques, a wide variety of tools, equipment, and measuring devices. 3. Operate and perform corrective and preventive maintenance on heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration, fire alarm systems, medical gas systems, and related equipment in accordance with operations, safety, and regulatory requirements. 4. Operate and perform corrective and preventive maintenance on all boilers and related equipment in accordance with operations, safety, and regulatory requirements. 5. Follow oral and/or written instructions. Read, understand, and work from shop drawings, maintenance manuals and blueprints. 6. Maintain appropriate records. Keep supervisor informed as to status of assignments, emergency and safety situations and other matters which may affect the operation of the department. 7. Maintain inventory of supplies and equipment. Order parts and materials as assigned. 8. Establish and maintain cooperative working relations with employees and the general public. 9. May train, instruct, and/or direct the work of other maintenance personnel, as directed.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS EITHER I
The equivalent of one year in the class of Building Equipment Maintenance Worker, Automatic Guided Vehicle Technician in the Alameda County classified service. (Non-classified includes District Attorney's Office, Hospital Authority, and the Consolidated Courts.)OR II:
Experience:
The equivalent of four years of full-time experience as a stationary or operating engineer responsible for the operation of steam boilers and related equipment, two years of which included experience maintaining and repairing mechanical, electrical, plumbing, refrigeration, HVAC and control systems.License:
Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's license.Certificate:
Possession of a universal CFC (Chloro-Fluoro-Carbon) Certificate, mandated by the Environmental Protection Agency for servicing refrigeration and air conditioning equipment.Physical Characteristics:
May require heavy lifting, working from ladders or scaffolding, and working in confined areas.Special Requirements:
Must be able to obtain and maintain security clearance.NOTE:

The level and scope of the following knowledge and abilities are related to duties listed under the "Examples of Duties" section of this specification.Knowledge of:
Theory and operation of boilers, steam equipment and condensate return systems. The operation of building HVAC and control systems. Plumbing systems and general plumbing repairs. Electrical systems and general electrical system repairs. General mechanical theory and practices. Safety practices applicable to electrical and mechanical maintenance.Ability to:
Repair HVAC equipment. Perform welding, brazing, soldering and other general machine shop work. Fabricate, using materials such as sheet metal, round stock, angle and flat iron, pipe, expanded metal, screen, etc. Use a variety of basic hand tools, e.g. wrenches, screwdrivers, drills, grinders, pliers, test equipment, sheet metal, metal fabricating tools and other machine shop equipment. Follow general and detailed verbal and written instructions. Work from blueprints, electrical schematics and sketches. Keep proper records pertaining to work schedules, log of shift operations and inventory. Establish and maintain cooperative working relations with employees and the general public. Perform difficult mechanical and utility repair work. Direct the work of and/or instruct inmates and/or other maintenance personnel as required. Respond independently in emergency situations and work under minimal supervision on weekend or evening shifts.
