Substation Design Engineer About the Opportunity This opportunity would support an owner-operator electric utility and energy producer committed to grid modernization, system reliability, and long-term infrastructure investment. The organization supports a diverse generation portfolio and is focused on delivering safe, dependable power while advancing sustainability and evolving energy solutions across the communities it serves. Job Description The Substation Design Engineer will support the planning, design, and implementation of new and replacement substation equipment. This role focuses on physical substation engineering, including detailed design development, engineering calculations, and integration of geotechnical data to support reliable and constructible substation solutions. Responsibilities Perform physical substation engineering design, including: General arrangement drawings Electrical plans Grounding plans Create, review, or coordinate foundation and structural designs Develop bills of materials and equipment lists from engineering designs Review and apply geotechnical analysis to substation layouts and foundations Design or evaluate site civil plans, including grading, access, drainage, and erosion control Apply applicable industry standards and utility design practices Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including planning, protection, construction, and field operations Manage engineering documentation and maintain organized project records Required Skills & Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering 1+ years of experience in substation engineering, power systems, industrial electrical, transmission, or protection & controls Proficiency in AutoCAD Strong communication skills with the ability to convey technical concepts clearly Ability to work collaboratively with internal teams and external contractors Preferred Qualifications EIT or PE certification (preferred, not required) Work Environment This is a primarily office-based role with a standard 40-hour work week, Monday through Friday. Occasional substation site visits may be required, supported by a company vehicle. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Indianapolis, IN. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $40.00 - $60.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
