Organization Overview Lilly Is currently constructing the Lilly Medicines Foundry in Lebanon, In. This is a unique opportunity to be a part of the Utilities Engineering startup team for a greenfield site. We are seeking a Plant Utilities Engineering Technical Subject Matter Expert to support the FUME Team. This Utilities engineering role will be responsible for Plant Utilities Systems such as Steam/Condensate, Domestic/Hot Water, Compressed Air, Chilled Water, Glycol Systems, Soft Water, etc. In the Project Delivery Phase and Startup Phase of the project (2025 To 2027), roles will be fluid and dynamic as we endeavor to support the project delivery, build a new organization, develop and implement the necessary systems and business processes required to support GMP operations and build the site culture. This will require significant collaboration, creativity and resilience as the Lilly Medicines Foundry goes from start-up to operational.
Responsibilities Facility Start-Up:
Serve as a primary technical resource to the Global Facility Delivery Team, with a focus on right-first-time, on-schedule facility startup. Lead commissioning, qualification, and validation (C&Q/CSV) activities for all utility systems; own and maintain the qualified state of all assets within your area of responsibility. Develop and execute unit operation shakedown and startup protocols, including Performance Qualification (PQ) protocol development. Participate in design reviews, process safety assessments, and user requirements development across the full utility system portfolio. Define key elements of the Integrated Operational Readiness Plan, including SOP development, maintenance strategy, automation optimization, pre-startup safety reviews, and alarm management. Engineering & Operations Support Provide front line engineering support to Utilities Operations across the following core systems: Steam & Boiler Systems — Fire-tube boilers, burner management, feedwater chemistry (oxygen scavenging, pH/scale control), condensate return, andASME BPVC
compliance. Chillers & Chilled Water Systems — Centrifugal and /or screw chillers; refrigerant management; heat transfer efficiency; and chiller sequencing/loading optimization. Cooling Towers & Condenser Water — Open-loop tower operation, water treatment programs (biocide, scale/corrosion inhibitors), and Legionella risk management perASHRAE 188.
Compressed Air & Instrument Air — Rotary screw; refrigerated/desiccant dryer systems; andISO 8573
air purity compliance (dew point, particulates, oil content). Hot Water & Domestic Water Systems — Distribution, recirculation, and temperature control for Legionella mitigation; support for higher-purity hot water systems in pharmaceutical service. Glycol & Low-Temperature Cooling — Closed-loop glycol systems for sub-ambient applications; inhibitor/concentration monitoring; heat exchanger and expansion tank management. Water Treatment & Softened Water — Multimedia filtration, ion exchange softeners, and chemical dosing systems; integration with downstream RO, DI, and WFI purification trains. Monitor, trend, and document equipment performance data to maintain ongoing qualification status and ensure GMP compliance. Develop and maintain Basis of Safety documentation for all equipment within scope. Apply root cause analysis (RCA) methodologies — including fishbone, fault tree analysis, and 5-Why — to investigate equipment and process deviations; develop and implement robust corrective and preventive actions (CAPAs). Continuous Improvement & Optimization Integrate process simulation, energy modeling, and data analytics to identify inefficiencies and drive improvements across utility systems. Lead or participate in energy optimization initiatives, including heat recovery, variable frequency drive (VFD) optimization, and utility system sequencing strategies. Identify and implement continuous improvement opportunities as a core member of cross-functional process teams. Partner with automation, maintenance, and operations teams to optimize control strategies and ensure utility systems reliably support manufacturing operations. Knowledge Transfer & Leadership Support initial operations training as the recognized equipment and process SME for utility systems. Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and operations personnel. Author and review technical procedures, engineering standards, and qualification documentation. Basic Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline. 3+ years of experience in a manufacturing or industrial utilities engineering role, with demonstrated hands-on expertise in two or more of the following: fire-tube/water-tube boilers, centrifugal/screw chillers, cooling tower water treatment, industrial compressed air systems, or glycol-based cooling systems. Qualified applicants must be authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. requirements as applicable to utility systems. Experience with GMP commissioning and qualification (C&Q) in FDA-regulated environments. Familiarity with building automation systems (BAS/BMS) and utility SCADA platforms. Proficiency with energy modeling, process simulation, or utility system performance analysis tools. Ability To Work on Own Initiative and as Part of a Process Team Consisting of a Diverse Group of Management, Production, Science and Engineering Professionals. The anticipated wage for this position is $66,000 - $171,600 Full-time equivalent employees also will be eligible for a company bonus (depending, in part, on company and individual performance).
