Job Title:
Distribution Engineer I (Durham) Job Description Kick‑start your engineering career designing real‑world electrical distribution systems. As a Distribution Engineer I, you'll support overhead and underground power projects, working alongside experienced technical leads. This role blends office‑based design with field work, giving you hands‑on exposure to utility systems, GIS tools, and construction coordination. Responsibilities Design overhead and underground distribution work packages (4 kV-138 kV). Support programs such as overloaded transformers, inspections, joint use, and street lighting. Create OH, UG, URD, make‑ready, and streetlight designs using GIS and work management systems. Perform field visits to gather data and support accurate, buildable designs. Complete engineering calculations including pole loading, guying, sag/tension, voltage drop, and flicker. Prepare permits, easements, and ROW documentation. Support construction teams by answering questions and reviewing completed work. Assist with outage analysis, urban cable projects, and coordination with other utilities. Essential Skills BS in Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, or related engineering discipline. 0-1 years of engineering or technical experience (new grads welcome). Strong communication skills—written and verbal. Basic engineering calculation skills and willingness to learn utility standards. Comfortable working in both office and field environments. Proficiency with Microsoft Office; interest in learning GIS tools. Additional Skills & Qualifications Interest in power distribution, street lighting, and utility design standards. Ability to interpret engineering drawings and construction specifications. Strong problem‑solving and organizational skills. Interest in urban utility coordination, protection, and network systems. Work Environment You'll spend most of your time in the office designing and documenting projects, with occasional field visits for inspections and coordination. The role offers structured training, mentorship, and exposure to real utility infrastructure projects in a collaborative engineering environment. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Durham, NC. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $29.81 - $29.81/hr.
