We invite you to apply for the position of Assistant City Engineer, a key leadership role within our Engineering Division! As the second-in-command to the City Engineer, you will play an integral part in planning, building, and maintaining the City's public infrastructure. This is an exciting opportunity to lead talented staff, manage complex capital projects, and ensure the successful delivery of high-impact, grant-funded initiatives. In this role, you will help guide the long-term vision for our city's streets, utilities, and public works, while stepping in as Acting City Engineer when needed. What You'll Do
  • Lead and support staff, consultants, and contractors working on engineering design, construction, and inspection.
  • Manage large, multi-phase infrastructure projects, many of which are state or federally funded.
  • Help shape the City's Capital Improvement Program (CIP) and long-range infrastructure plans.
  • Review and approve engineering plans, specifications, and cost estimates.
  • Coordinate with residents, community groups, agencies, and utilities on project goals and updates.
  • Contribute to departmental budgeting, strategic planning, and policy development.
  • Ensure compliance with all technical standards, codes, and funding requirements.
  • Represent the Engineering Division at public meetings—occasionally outside regular working hours.

Monadnock Region Minimum Qualifications:
A bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a closely related field, plus 3-5 years of progressive professional engineering experience in municipal or public works projects. The NH Office of Professional Licensure and Certification (OPLC) registration as an Engineer-in-Training (E.I.T.) is required. The NH OPLC registration as a Professional Engineer (P.E.) is required within 24 months of employment. A valid driver's license is required.
Salary and Benefits:
This full-time position offers a competitive salary range of $89,912- $112,046 annually and will also receive an attractive benefits package which includes low deductible/low-cost health insurance, low-cost dental insurance, State of NH Group I retirement, and other benefits such as life insurance, disability, and paid time off. Municipal employees may also qualify for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) Program.
