Distribution Engineer Job Description As a Distribution Engineer, you collect and analyze field data to support the design of overhead and underground power distribution systems. You work closely with experienced engineers, designers, and project managers while using industry-standard design and GIS tools to develop safe, reliable, and efficient distribution solutions. This role offers an excellent opportunity for an entry-level engineering graduate to build a strong foundation in the power and utility sector, contribute to large-scale utility projects, and grow into a long-term career in engineering and design. Responsibilities Collect detailed field data, including pole heights, voltages, equipment locations, and related attributes, to support distribution design activities. Perform field visits to project sites to gain hands-on knowledge of the power grid and validate existing system conditions. Attend client meetings to discuss project requirements, present findings, and support design decisions. Assist more advanced team members with various distribution engineering and design tasks throughout the project lifecycle. Utilize software tools such as SPANS, CREWS, and DDS to perform design, modeling, and documentation of distribution systems. Learn and apply PoleForeman or similar pole loading and structural analysis software to evaluate and design pole structures. Prepare and update design documentation, drawings, and reports using CAD and GIS tools in alignment with project standards. Coordinate with internal team members and external stakeholders to ensure accurate data collection, design consistency, and timely project delivery. Travel to project sites as needed to perform field assessments and data collection, with mileage reimbursed according to company policy. Essential Skills Bachelor's degree in Engineering, preferably in Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, or Environmental Engineering. Fundamental understanding of engineering principles related to power distribution systems. Ability to collect, interpret, and verify field data for use in engineering designs. Proficiency or familiarity with CAD tools for creating and modifying engineering drawings. Ability to learn and use software such as SPANS, CREWS, DDS, and PoleForeman for distribution design and analysis. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail and accuracy. Effective verbal and written communication skills for collaborating with team members and participating in client meetings. Willingness and ability to travel to field sites as required for data collection and project support. Additional Skills & Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, or Environmental) is strongly preferred. Prior experience or internship exposure to distribution design is a plus. Experience with distribution design software or similar engineering applications is beneficial. Familiarity with GIS tools for mapping and asset management is advantageous. Experience using AutoCAD or similar CAD platforms to produce engineering drawings is a plus. Interest in the power and utility sector and a desire to grow within a continuously evolving industry. Ability to work effectively in a team environment alongside advanced engineers, designers, and project managers. Motivation to develop technical expertise and progress into more advanced engineering and design responsibilities. Work Environment This role operates in a hybrid work environment that combines office-based and field-based activities. You work closely with advanced engineers, designers, and project managers, using tools such as Auto
CAD, CAD
platforms, GIS systems, and specialized distribution design software including SPANS, CREWS, DDS, and PoleForeman. Your time is split between computer-based design work and on-site field work, where you gather data and observe existing power distribution infrastructure. Travel to project sites is required, with mileage reimbursed in accordance with company policy. You join a collaborative, professional engineering setting that supports learning, mentorship, and growth while contributing to major projects for large investor-owned utilities in the power and utility sector.
