Job Description

Substation Engineer Overview Join a utility-focused engineering team responsible for designing and supporting the reliability, safety and performance of electric substation, transmission and generation control systems. This role supports a utility environment and plays a key part in protection and control design across a broad service area. Key Responsibilities Perform engineering design for electric substation, transmission line and generation equipment control systems, including fault protection systems. Specify substation equipment based on system ratings to support safe and reliable operation. Design protective relay systems, metering and SCADA in accordance with applicable standards, regulations and system requirements. Gather and analyze system data and ratings to support reporting needs and evolving system requirements. Develop detailed protection and control project scopes and cost estimates for multi-year capital projects. Provide technical support to operations and construction teams, including troubleshooting and failure analysis. Prepare and review technical drawings and specifications to ensure compliance with engineering and utility standards. Direct and support designers and technicians by reviewing work, monitoring progress and ensuring adherence to safety and regulatory requirements. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program. Experience supporting a utility in substation, generation and transmission line equipment control. Strong knowledge of generation, transmission and distribution relays and protection schemes. Expertise in substation design and protection and control systems. Strong understanding of electrical engineering principles, advanced mathematics, and system analysis. Ability to interpret and develop schematic, wiring and logic diagrams. Experience developing elementary drawings and relay logic for protection system designs. Proficiency in AutoCAD. Proficiency with standard business tools, including word processing, spreadsheets and databases. Preferred Strengths Strong organizational and proofreading skills with close attention to detail. Dependable, self-motivated and able to manage multiple priorities effectively. Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams. Ability to perform well in a fast-paced, high-accountability environment. Work Environment This role works closely with engineering, operations, construction and design teams in support of utility infrastructure projects. The position is ideal for someone who thrives in a collaborative environment and is motivated by delivering safe, reliable and compliant power system solutions. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Kansas City, MO. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $43.33 - $80.00/hr.
