Job Description
Job Title:
Transmission Line EngineerJob Description The Transmission Line Engineer supports high-voltage transmission line projects, typically ranging from 69 kV to 500 kV, from conceptual design through construction support. The role involves detailed engineering, cross-discipline coordination, and technical leadership, with a focus on safe, reliable, and compliant overhead line design. Candidates ideally bring a civil or mechanical engineering background, with consideration for electrical engineers who have relevant tower experience and strong familiarity with California utility standards and GO‑95 requirements. Responsibilities + Prepare detailed engineering calculations, specifications, drawings, and scope documents for complete transmission line construction packages. + Lead and coordinate design engineers and technical staff to deliver high-quality, compliant transmission line designs on schedule and within project constraints. + Review and validate technical reports, engineering studies, and design documentation to ensure accuracy, constructability, and adherence to applicable codes and standards. + Coordinate closely with contractors, permitting agencies, and internal disciplines to support project execution and resolve design and field issues. + Provide construction and field support, including responding to RFIs, addressing site conditions, and recommending design adjustments as needed. + Apply project management practices related to engineering quality, safety, risk management, and execution for assigned transmission line projects. + Contribute engineering expertise across multiple power delivery projects, including lines, poles, and towers, supporting both new builds and modifications. + Develop and refine transmission line models, route alignments, and plan and profile drawings using the PLS software suite. + Prepare and review assembly, framing, loading, and design drawings for wood, concrete, steel, FRP, and lattice structures, including lattice towers. + Interpret and incorporate survey, GIS, and geotechnical data into design models, including foundation design and embedment calculations. + Collaborate with electrical engineers on related studies such as EMF, grounding, fault current, contaminants, and clearance analysis, and integrate results into line designs. + Communicate complex engineering concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, supporting decision-making and stakeholder alignment. Essential Skills + Minimum of 3+ years of experience in transmission line engineering or closely related transmission line design work. + Strong background in civil, structural, or mechanical engineering applied to overhead transmission lines, poles, and towers. + Proficiency in transmission line design using the PLS software suite, including PLS‑CADD, PLS‑Pole, and PLS‑Tower, with experience in modeling, route alignment, plan and profile development, and structural analysis. + Strong knowledge of conductors, hardware assemblies, structure detailing, and preparation of bills of material for transmission line projects. + Experience developing assembly, framing, loading, and design drawings for wood, concrete, steel, FRP, and lattice structures, with lattice tower experience preferred. + Ability to interpret geotechnical data and apply it to foundation design and embedment calculations for transmission structures. + Ability to work with survey and GIS data and accurately integrate this information into PLS‑CADD models. + Proficiency with engineering and office software, including PLS‑CADD, PLS‑Pole, PLS‑Tower, L‑Pile, MFAD, and Microsoft Office. + Familiarity with industry standards and codes relevant to transmission line design, including ASCE, ACI, IEEE, NESC, RUS, and GO‑95. + Self-motivated, with strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively. + Proven ability to work collaboratively in team environments, manage workloads, and support stakeholder expectations. + Strong technical communication skills, with the ability to clearly explain complex engineering solutions to both technical and non-technical audiences. Additional Skills & Qualifications + Civil or mechanical engineering background preferred, with consideration for electrical engineers who have substantial transmission tower design experience. + Experience working with major California utilities or on California transmission projects, including practical application of GO‑95 requirements. + Familiarity with related electrical studies such as EMF, grounding, fault current, contaminants, and clearance analysis, and how they influence line design. + Demonstrated interest in long-term career growth in power delivery, with the ability to progress into deeper technical expertise or project leadership roles. + Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, ensuring completeness and accuracy of engineering deliverables. + Ability to operate effectively in a matrixed, multidisciplinary project environment, coordinating with civil, structural, electrical, and environmental teams. Work Environment The role offers the opportunity to work on complex, large-scale infrastructure projects across multiple markets, providing variety and technically meaningful work rather than repetitive or narrowly scoped tasks. Engineers work within high-caliber, collaborative teams where colleagues are described as smart, supportive, and highly engaged at the project level. The culture emphasizes flexibility and trust, especially for experienced professionals, with many employees noting improved work-life balance as they gain seniority and influence over how projects are executed. The organization supports long-term career development, allowing engineers to grow into advanced technical roles, project leadership, or new disciplines without needing to change employers. Work is primarily performed in a professional office and hybrid environment using modern engineering tools such as the PLS software suite, L‑Pile, MFAD, and Microsoft Office, with periodic field and construction site visits to support project execution. The company is recognized externally for its positive culture and as a strong place to build a lasting engineering career.
