Job Description
Position Summary The Engineering Technician position provides technical support to the Electrical Department by conducting inspections, reviewing submissions, designing extensions and improvements to electrical system infrastructure, resolving technical issues, and maintaining systems and databases for system operation. Essential Functions Reviews commercial and residential development plans prepared by others; resolves technical issues during planning and construction in accordance with applicable codes and safety regulations. Researches, builds, and maintains system databases, communications systems and switching procedures which aid in the design and increase in system productivity, reliability, and facilitate system maintenance. Responds to residential and commercial customer inquiries and concerns. Resolves technical issues in accordance with applicable codes and safety regulations; interacts with other departments, City personnel, and external agencies and organizations when required to accomplish duties. Performs mathematical calculations related to electrical system design, including voltage drop, fault current, and conductor sizing; researches and writes equipment specifications. Reviews commercial and residential development plans to design electrical infrastructure and make systems improvements. Develops, publishes and maintains specifications and standards and ensures projects comply with applicable state laws and departmental policies. Conducts field inspections to ensure code compliance and design compliance, monitors contract performance, reviews invoices, and routes them to the manager for approval. Maintains and updates department record-keeping systems, both paper and electronic formats. Develops, publishes, maintains, and performs checks for standards and material specifications. Assists other employees and departments in the completion of related duties as necessary. Responds to emergencies 24/7 days a week to support power restoration activities. Designs modifications, extensions, and improvements to high voltage underground and overhead electrical distribution systems; ensures all designs comply with applicable safety codes, state and local laws, and departmental policies; obtains necessary easements and ensures easements are recorded. Operates complex engineering software, including system software evaluating electric load, capacities, alternative feeds, and conducts other system operation-related studies. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of Electrical systems and operations, including automated systems such as Automated Meter Infrastructure, SCADA systems and system modeling. Knowledge of local, State and Federal laws and regulations pertaining to utilities, and other regulatory requirements. Knowledge of rate structures and their application for all city utilities. Knowledge of proper techniques for handling large sums of cash in a safe and responsible manner. Knowledge of laws covering tax collection and processing. Knowledge of City and department policies and procedures. Knowledge of Tennessee Valley Authority contracts and agreements. Knowledge of and ability to effectively utilize the principles of strategic and long-range and short-range planning. Knowledge of management and supervisory practices & principles. Required Education, Experience, Licensing, and Certifications Associate degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or related field. Must meet United States Citizen requirements as determined by the United States Department of Energy. This position closes at 12:00 p.m. EST, Thursday, April 9, 2026.
