Job Title:
Power Systems Engineer Job Description This role offers an experienced Power Systems Engineer the opportunity to design, analyze, and support complex medium- and low-voltage power generation, distribution, and microgrid systems. You will lead advanced electrical studies using ETAP and SKM, develop critical technical documentation, and provide engineering support across multiple projects focused on power delivery and grid resiliency. This is a long-term contract-to-hire position based in Houston, Texas, with a collaborative office environment and the potential for overtime. Responsibilities + Design and review medium- and low-voltage electrical power generation, distribution, and microgrid systems, including associated infrastructure and equipment. + Prepare detailed electrical engineering documentation such as short circuit studies, arc flash and coordination studies, power system studies, grounding studies, load flow analyses, harmonics analyses, fault studies, and transient studies using ETAP and/or SKM. + Develop and maintain single line diagrams, electrical bills of materials (BOMs), and other engineering drawings and reports related to electrical system studies. + Produce documentation related to area classifications, fugitive emissions studies, and other required engineering reports that support power generation and distribution projects. + Develop and maintain technical documentation, standards, and procedures related to electrical systems to ensure consistency, safety, and compliance. + Support the design and analysis of distribution lines, substations, switchgear, switchboards, and other power distribution and substation connections. + Design and implement power generation controls and automation solutions, ensuring reliable and efficient operation of power systems. + Program digital multifunction relays and develop relay logic, electrical protection schemes, and coordination schemes for power distribution and generation systems. + Perform load calculations and electrical system modeling to ensure proper sizing, coordination, and performance of power system components. + Provide engineering support to other departments as needed, collaborating with cross-functional teams to resolve technical issues and support project delivery. + Contribute to grid and microgrid resiliency initiatives by supporting the design and analysis of resilient power systems and related infrastructure. + Review and validate engineering designs and calculations prepared by others to ensure accuracy and adherence to project requirements and industry standards. + Participate in project planning and coordination activities, including supporting submittals and documentation required for project approvals. + Maintain familiarity with relevant codes, standards, and best practices in power systems engineering and apply them to project work. Essential Skills + 12+ years of electrical engineering experience, with a strong focus on power systems. + 10+ years of experience working as a Power Systems Engineer or Electrical Engineer on power delivery or related projects. + At least 5+ years of hands-on experience using ETAP and/or SKM for power system analysis and studies. + Proven experience supporting medium-voltage power generation system design, including distribution line design. + Demonstrated experience in power distribution, including work with distribution systems, substations, switchgear, and switchboards. + Experience supporting distribution and substation connections for power systems projects. + Experience in power generation controls and automation, including integration with power distribution systems. + Experience programming digital multifunction relays and configuring protection and control schemes. + Proficiency in developing relay logic, electrical protection schemes, and coordination schemes for power systems. + Previous experience in power distribution, ideally with a remote-as-a-service (RAAS) supplier or similar environment. + Proficiency in electrical design, including schematics, single line diagrams, and load calculations. + Advanced skills in performing short circuit, arc flash, coordination, load flow, grounding, harmonics, fault, and transient studies using
ETAP/SKM.
+ Strong understanding of power systems, power distribution, grid operations, and grid resiliency concepts. + Ability to develop and maintain comprehensive technical documentation, drawings, and reports for electrical systems. + Ability to work effectively in a collaborative engineering environment and provide support to other departments as required. Additional Skills & Qualifications + Experience with microgrid design, analysis, or implementation. + Experience with natural gas-fueled power generation systems. + Familiarity with grid and microgrid resiliency strategies and technologies. + Experience preparing area classifications, fugitive emissions studies, and related engineering documentation. + Experience working in environments focused on power delivery and power generation projects. + Strong attention to detail and ability to produce accurate technical documentation and reports. + Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects, including support for submittals and project documentation. + Interest in long-term contract-to-hire opportunities with potential for extended project involvement. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Houston, TX. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $60.00 - $65.00/hr.
