We are seeking a dynamic and outcome-driven Engineer to lead Kinder Scientific as it expands products and enters new markets.
Description Summary:
Kinder Scientific (KS) is seeking a hands-on Product Engineer responsible for leading new product development, managing production oversight, and providing customer technical support. This role plays a critical part in both execution and leadership, bridging engineering, operations, and strategic planning to deliver innovative, reliable, and commercially viable products. Although the role is mostly autonomous, Kinder contracts with several trusted partners to help with specific areas of expertise, which would be at the disposal of the product engineer.
Essential Duties:
New Product Development:
Personally designing and leading the design of electronic, hardware and firmware components and products using a fail-fast, experimental approach and good judgment. Representing the Company at industry, scientific and business conferences and meetings. Considering the financial implications, proposing paths that meet market needs and the overall objectives of the business. Working with Marketing and Sales to develop product specifications considering user, regulatory, manufacturing, service and process requirements. Developing and testing prototypes and integrated systems as a part of the development process. Being familiar with the industry and science to create and foster an environment of innovation in developing new and improved products, processes, and technologies. Building and implementing project plans, reports, and hitting milestones. Technical Skill Capability to interpret and analyze mechanical drawings and electrical schematics. Ability to evaluate technical, functional, and cost impacts of design decisions. Knowledge of materials, tolerances, assemblies, and manufacturing processes. Ability to perform troubleshooting, testing, and root-cause analysis. Software & Design Ability to read, review, and understand SolidWorks designs. Experience validating 3D models, 2D drawings, and assemblies. Knowledge of organizing, reviewing, and storing design files (PDM systems, structured folders, or version control). Ability to identify design issues, interferences, and improvement opportunities in CAD models. Basic understanding of Bills of Materials (BOMs) and technical documentation.
Customer Service:
Provide excellent Customer Support and Training for products including: Electronics and software technical customer support, at headquarters and in the field, including troubleshooting, repair, installation and some light fabrication of medtech devices. Interfacing with customers in person, via phone, video chat and email. Support escalated matters in the US and internationally with training and Installation. Develop troubleshooting and repair material including self-service material. A key part of this role is to develop and implement customer self-service aids and other means to reduce the time commitment to this responsibility.
Production Management:
- Oversee and interface with outside manufacturing vendors in producing the Company's products.
- Ensure quality standards in all products being developed.
- Influence timelines when working with external vendors.
- Eye for improving producibility and workflow.
Management & Collaboration with
Leadership:
Create budgets for approval on projects, and manage against budgets. Establish clear performance metrics by identifying key objectives and performance measures to drive both program and organization success. Collaborate with Senior Leadership to develop a 3-year vision. Define and grow areas of strategic focus in alignment with the Company's objectives. Identify and manage appropriate external experts, develop recommendations and present findings to Senior Leadership.
Measures of success:
- Successful launch or advancement of new or improved products.
- Improved manufacturability, quality, or production efficiency.
- Reduced customer support burden through improved design or customer self-service tools.
- Strong collaboration with leadership, vendors, and customers.
Job Requirements:
BS OR MS
degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Biomedical Engineering, Physics or similar technical discipline. Hands on electrical hobbies such as amateur radio, Arduino, Raspberry Pi, home automation, Maker Faire, audiophile, radio astronomy, etc. Ability to travel up to 15% including international travel. Experience designing analog, digital and programmable devices including firmware and software interface. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Excellent computer skills. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Apps.
Desirable Qualifications:
Degree or substantial experience in Engineering, Business management, or related field OR Neuroscience, behavior or related field. Must work well under pressure Completes assignments within established timelines. Experience establishing and implementing strategy. Track record of developing new products. Proficiency in Project Management. Broad knowledge of emerging trends in science and engineering. Ability to develop and modify CAD/CAM systems.
