The Product Engineer for Power Cable combines technical knowledge with cross‑functional team interaction skills to support power cable product design and development. The Product Engineer ensures product functionality, compliance, and manufacturability by engaging with Product Management, Operations, Engineering, and Quality teams. This role serves as Power Cable Engineering's lead for R D trials, product and material qualifications, and product evaluations.
Essential Job Functions:
Responsible for cable design compliance with customer specifications, industry standards, and plant capabilities. Performs technical reviews of customer specifications and requirements. Works closely with the Quality team to ensure product compliance, root cause analysis, testing capabilities, and other quality initiatives. Maintains engineering documentation such as product qualification reports, cable data sheets, and cable performance models. Leads R D initiatives at the plant level. Generates R D trial plans, test protocols, and provides technical support during manufacturing trials. Supports Operations, including Process Engineering and Procurement, with continuous improvement initiatives, material qualifications and evaluations, and process improvements. Supports Commercial teams through technical education, technical support, customer visits, and marketing material development. Utilizes voice of the customer to guide product improvement opportunities. Generates and delivers technical presentations. Supports ERP system improvements, work instructions, and supporting technical documentation. Supports the generation and maintenance of BOMs and routers for power cable products in the ERP system. Analyzes ERP system data to support product‑related decision making. Supports projects conducted through third‑party test agencies. Contributes to the development of industry standards through participation in industry standard committees. Researches competitor product offerings and monitors industry trends. Supports and backs up Engineering team members as required. Team‑oriented while also able to work independently. Some travel required, including visits between MU facilities, industry conferences, and customer sites.
Education, Experience, Skills, and Knowledge Qualifications:
Four‑year engineering degree required; BS in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering preferred. Two to four years of experience with utility distribution and transmission systems. Experience in product design and manufacturing preferred. Strong real‑time problem‑solving skills. Effective communication across multiple platforms, including in person, email, phone, and video conferencing. Proficient in Microsoft Office applications. Basic project management experience. Ability to support and lead project teams. Ability to manage travel arrangements. Working knowledge of Lean manufacturing core tools is a plus.
Working Conditions and Physical Demands:
Requires extended periods working at a computer. Occasional work at or near manufacturing equipment, which may require standing for extended periods. Must be willing and able to travel up to approximately 15% for business needs.
