Job Description

With more than $1B in revenue, Tennant Company is a globally recognized leader in the cleaning equipment industry. For the past 150 years, we have been passionate about developing and manufacturing innovative and sustainable solutions for our customers. At Tennant Company, we are committed to stewardship and creating a cleaner, safer and healthier world. With manufacturing, operations and sales, service, and support functions across the globe, your journey at Tennant can take you places you never expected. We're building the next generation of industrial and commercial mobile cleaning robots, and we're looking for a Senior Mechanical Engineer who wants to own meaningful subsystems—not just tasks. This is a hands-on, execution-driven role where your designs go from concept to production and into the field.
If you thrive on solving complex, ambiguous problems, collaborating across disciplines, and seeing your engineering decisions directly shape a physical product, you'll feel right at home here. What You'll Do
As a Senior Mechanical Engineer, you'll lead the design and development of mechanical and electro‑mechanical subsystems that are central to our robot platforms' performance, cost, and reliability.
You will: Design and develop innovative mechanical and electro-mechanical subsystems that deliver durable competitive advantage
Generate new concepts and architectures to meet functional and performance requirements
Define subsystem performance specifications and evolve them over time
Create layouts, 3D models, sketches, and schematics to solve complex engineering problems
Determine required analyses, models, and drawings—and drive them through release
Lead subsystem development from concept → prototype → validation → production
Leverage lab and field test data to make informed design tradeoffs
Perform root-cause analysis when designs don't meet requirements
Collaborate closely with electrical, software, manufacturing, and system teams
Lead and participate in design reviews (formal and informal)
Plan and execute subsystem prototype builds and support full machine builds
Own verification and validation testing at the subsystem level
Partner with suppliers to achieve performance and cost targets
Mentor junior engineers and designers throughout the development lifecycle
Create and maintain engineering standards and design documentation that scale What Makes This Role Exciting Real hardware: You'll design machines that leave the lab and operate in real environments
End-to-end ownership: See your work through from early concept to production launch
Cross-functional impact: Tight collaboration with systems, electrical, software, and manufacturing engineering
Technical depth: Complex electro-mechanical systems with meaningful design tradeoffs
Leadership without bureaucracy: Lead technically, mentor others, and influence direction What We're Looking For
Required Qualifications BS in Engineering (Mechanical or related) from an ABET-accredited university
3 years of mechanical design engineering experience
Strong experience in new product development
Proficiency with CAD (SolidWorks strongly preferred)
Solid understanding of mechanical and computer-controlled electro-mechanical systems
Expertise in: GD&T, tolerance stack-ups, and tolerance analysis
FMEA and risk-based design
Data-driven decision making and statistical analysis Ability to model and predict system performance using engineering fundamentals
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Self-starter who can manage ambiguity and drive solutions independently Preferred Qualifications MS in Engineering
Project or technical leadership experience
Six Sigma experience
Experience creating engineering standards and best practices Who You Are A creative problem solver who enjoys tackling hard, open-ended engineering challenges
Comfortable balancing performance, cost, reliability, and schedule
Passionate about building robust products—not just elegant designs
Motivated by impact, ownership, and continuous technical growth Why Join Us?
You'll work with a highly skilled team building autonomous machines that solve real customer problems, with the opportunity to influence designs that scale across product platforms. We value engineering rigor, practical innovation, and people who want to leave things better than they found them. Competitive base salary commensurate with experience: $78,700 - 118,100.
Posted salary ranges are made in good faith. Tennant Co. reserves the right to adjust ranges depending on the experience/qualifications of the selected candidate as well as internal and external equity. Total Compensation = Base Salary + Benefits
