Job Description
at Consulting Engineering Inc. in Naperville, Illinois, United States Job Description This position is for Naperville and surrounding areas. A Water Leak Field Technician is responsible for locating underground water leaks. Generally working independently, planning one's day, moving efficiently through daily assignments, performing leak surveys on segments of the water distribution system, and responding to occasional leak calls to pinpoint and document suspected/known leaks found are typcial in a day. Through assessing provided GIS and mapping information, considerable knowledge of a distribution system and independent judgment must be used as leak detection depends heavily on one's ability to interpret survey results and problem solve. Leak surveying is performed using acoustic detection equipment while locating, classifying, and recording water leaks according to severity and noting secondary risk assessments.
Useful skills to acquire include:
Ability to use an L-mic to listen and survey the origin of water leaks. When necessary, set barricades, cones, and/or signs as-needed to safely protect work areas while minimally impacting traffic. Able to read a map and use GIS Mapping to listen, locate and pinpoint leaks. With experience, a technician will direct the customer to the closest probable location using state-of-the-art computerized correlation technology to be verified with additional crossover technology (ground microphones, loggers, line locating, etc.) and provide a better knowledge of the location of valves and mains to allow utility personnel to react quickly when emergencies occur. Information gathered during leak detection surveys can also be used to verify and update system maps. Following a leak survey, with the help of data collection software, a Field Technician provides summary reports to our customers with valuable information on the type of leak, location, classification, and quantity of non-revenue water loss.
