Job Description

The Role We are seeking an experienced GPS Survey Crew Chief to lead field survey operations using
GNSS/RTK
equipment across varied and often rugged Appalachian terrain. The right candidate will run crews independently, manage field data quality, coordinate with the office on project requirements, and serve as our firm's representative to landowners and clients in the field. This is a hands-on leadership position for someone who thrives outdoors, takes ownership of their work, and communicates well with rural property owners. Responsibilities Lead one- and two-person field crews on boundary, topographic, construction layout, and control surveys Operate and manage
GNSS/RTK
receivers, total stations, data collectors, and related survey equipment Initialize, calibrate, and troubleshoot GPS equipment in the field, including in areas with challenging satellite reception (heavy canopy, steep terrain, narrow valleys) Collect accurate field data and maintain organized, thorough field notes Perform boundary retracement using metes-and-bounds deed descriptions, recovering and setting monuments in accordance with Tennessee Standards of Practice Communicate professionally with property owners to explain survey purpose, obtain access, and gather information about property history, old fences, corners, and landmarks Coordinate daily with the office on project status, scheduling, and data transfer Maintain and care for all assigned equipment and the survey vehicle Required Minimum 3 years of land surveying field experience, including operation of
GNSS/RTK
equipment Demonstrated ability to lead a survey crew independently with minimal supervision Working knowledge of total stations, data collectors, and electronic field data workflows Familiarity with metes-and-bounds property descriptions and boundary retracement procedures Valid Tennessee driver's license with a clean driving record Physical ability to traverse steep, heavily wooded mountain terrain while carrying equipment in all weather conditions Strong interpersonal skills — you'll be knocking on doors, talking with landowners, and representing our firm Preferred NSPS Certified Survey Technician (CST) Level II or higher Experience surveying in East Tennessee or Southern Appalachian terrain Familiarity with Carlson Survey software and data collectors Experience with construction staking, subdivision platting, or FEMA elevation work Background in or comfort with rural communities and landowner relations
Pay:
Up to $25.00 per hour
