Job Description
Senior Survey TechnicianPosition OverviewWe are seeking an experienced Senior Survey Technician to support field and office surveying operations, deliver high-quality data and drawing deliverables, and support licensed surveyors in boundary, topographic, construction staking, and ALTA projects. The Senior Survey Technician will apply advanced land survey and data collection skills, operate and maintain total stations and GPS equipment, perform data processing and QA/QC, and ensure work complies with professional and regulatory standards while promoting safe field practices.
Key ResponsibilitiesLead and conduct field surveys including boundary, topographic (topo), geodetic, and construction staking assignments, ensuring accurate data collection and site documentation.
Operate and maintain survey instruments and data collectors such as total stations, GPS/RTK systems, levels, and robotic instruments; perform routine calibration and troubleshooting.
Collect, process, and verify survey data using industry-standard software and data collectors; produce field notes and as-built records.
Prepare and edit survey drawings and deliverables in AutoCAD/Civil3D and survey-specific software; translate field data into CAD-ready formats for professional review.
Perform quality control and quality assurance checks on field data, calculations, and deliverables to ensure compliance with project specifications, company principals, and regulatory requirements.
Support land surveyors and project managers with technical input, boundary research, legal descriptions, ALTA/NSPS compliance review, and project documentation.
Coordinate sampling and staking for construction stake out, layout, and as-built verification; communicate with contractors and project teams to resolve staking issues in the field.
Train, mentor, and supervise junior technicians and field crews; enforce safety guidelines, company policies, and best practices during field operations.
Maintain accurate project logs, equipment inventories, and maintenance records; ensure timely submission of field reports and data to the office team.
Participate in project planning, estimating, and client meetings; provide recommendations on methods, equipment, and staffing to meet schedule and budget constraints.
Qualifications5+ years of progressive land surveying experience with demonstrated expertise in field data collection and survey technician duties.
Strong proficiency with total stations, GPS/RTK equipment, data collectors, and common survey software workflows.
Hands-on experience with AutoCAD and Civil3D or similar CAD software for preparing survey plats, as-builts, and construction stakeout deliverables.
Solid understanding of boundary law concepts, ALTA/NSPS standards, geodetic and topographic surveying principles, and construction staking procedures.
Experience performing quality control/quality assurance on survey data and deliverables to meet regulatory and client requirements.
Proven ability to read and interpret plans, plats, and legal descriptions; familiarity with regulatory requirements and permitting processes preferred.
Excellent problem-solving, communication, and team leadership skills; ability to mentor junior staff and coordinate with surveyors, engineers, and contractors.
Valid drivers license and willingness to travel to job sites; physical ability to work outdoors in varied terrain and weather conditions.
Professional Surveyor certification is a plus.
