Role description Under general direction, manages a section or division by planning, assigning, directing, and reviewing the work of a group of technical and professional personnel engaged in land survey activities or the processing of map applications and the monument preservation and maintenance program. You are excited about this position because you will: Manages a section or division by planning, assigning, monitoring, and evaluating the work of subordinates. Reviews surveying or map requirements and resolves problems as needed. Examines areas to be surveyed and assigns the appropriate survey party. Checks field survey or map work in progress and directs subordinates when necessary. Performs surveying or map processing operations when necessary to assist staff in difficult situations. Collects and reviews survey notes or map applications for completeness and accuracy. Supervises the maintenance of official records, maps, and survey reports and the preparation of related reports. Develops, interprets, and coordinates surveying and map processing policy and methods for the department. Processes and checks subdivision map applications, plans, and survey records prepared by licensed land surveyors for technical and record information accuracy with respect to the California Subdivision Map Act and the San Francisco Subdivision Writes and checks boundary legal descriptions and performs other professional duties which require a licensed land surveyor. Manages horizontal and vertical control systems which may include use of Global Positioning System (GPS) monumentation/documentation program. Implements and maintains Geographic Information System (GIS) base map system. Updates codes and regulations and reviews proposed bills and budget, cost, and fee assessments. Makes regular contacts with the general public, other departments, contractors, private surveyors, and outside organizations relative to municipal mapping and survey. Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned. How to qualify Four (4) years of experience supervising survey parties. Possession of a valid California Professional Land Surveyor License, or a valid California Civil Engineer License (issued in 1981 or before). Possession of a valid California driver license (at least Class C).
Desirable Qualifications:
Ability to communicate with public, management, clients and other governmental and private agencies. Experience with managing, prioritizing, assigning, and coordinating the activities of survey staff. Familiarity with modern surveying equipment with GPS functionality and computing software. Experience with easements and legal descriptions. Selection Procedure:
After application submission, candidates deemed qualified must complete all subsequent steps to advance in this selection process, which includes the following: The selection process will include evaluation of applications in relation to minimum requirements. Applicants meeting the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement to the interview. Depending on the number of applicants, the Department may establish and implement additional screening mechanisms to comparatively evaluate the qualifications of candidates. If this becomes necessary, only those applicants whose qualifications most closely meet the needs of the Department will be invited for an interview.

Security Clearance:
Candidates for employment with the San Francisco Airport Commission are required to undergo a criminal history record check, including FBI fingerprints, and Security Threat Assessment in order to determine eligibility for security clearance and may be required to undergo drug/alcohol screening. Per Civil Service Commission Rule Section 110.9.1, every applicant for an examination must possess and maintain the qualifications required by law and by the examination announcement for the examination. Failure to obtain and maintain security clearance may be basis for termination from employment with the Airport Commission.
Customs Clearance:
This position requires that the incumbent be qualified for unescorted access to the San Francisco International Airport U.S. Customs Security Area. An application for a U.S. Custom Access Seal may be submitted to Customs ONLY after employment has commenced. Employment in this position requires that the incumbent submit an application for, successfully acquire and maintain a Customs Access Seal. Per Civil Service Commission Rule 110.9.1, every applicant must possess and maintain the qualifications required by law and by the examination announcement for this examination. Failure to acquire or maintain customs access, a requirement for this position, may be basis for termination from employment with the Airport Commission.
