UPSEU local 424-unit 35 Position Summary Under the general direction of the Town Engineer and/or Assistant Town Engineer supervises and performs lead technical work in an engineering surveying party. Serves as chief of party for the survey crew. Inspects construction projects as assigned. This position will involve working as a solo crew chief as well as part of a team. Occasional CAD work, calculations, or ancillary duties may be performed to assist field duties and act as a project manager. Essential Job Functions Efficiently operate survey equipment including total stations, levels, GPS equipment, and data collectors. Collection of data and review for accuracy. Ability to work as a one person crew following directions from the Town Engineer or their designee. Ability to perform CAD functions. Drafts profiles, cross-sections, topography, property maps and details. Perform a variety of tasks - ALTA/boundary, right-of-way surveys, control, topography, construction surveys, and related survey duties. Performs calculations to reduce field notes, to compute amounts of materials and to prepare partial and final estimates. Interact with the public. Research land records, deeds, titles, etc. Collaborates with stakeholders, including local officials, engineers, contractors, and supervisors, during the planning phase of a project. Flexibility to adapt to situations and circumstances Manual dexterity and willingness to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions and terrain environments Maintain accurate, legible organized records in accordance with all operations and work instructions. Adhere to all safety procedures and policies Read and interpret deeds and construction plan documents Self-motivated individual and display initiative Anticipate, prevent and solve problems (proactive vs. reactive) within his/her authority. As assigned, conducts field inspection of sanitary and storm sewer, sidewalk, road, building, and other related construction projects to ensure compliance with approved plans, proper methods, and Town Standards. Maintains survey equipment and keeps inventory of supplies. Fills in for and performs the tasks of other Engineering Department personnel. Performs other related duties as assigned Experience Requirements Working knowledge of applicable mathematics, including algebra, geometry and trigonometry Good knowledge of construction methods and materials Competent in solo surveying work and working as part of a crew. Experience with surveying equipment - GPS and robotic total stations; LiDAR and Trimble preferred, but not necessary. Strong communications skills. Thorough and attentive to details. Able to prioritize and multi-task. Proactive and deadline oriented. Ability to read and interpret documents in English, such as work orders, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, plans, specifications, and procedure manuals. Valid driver's license with a good driving record. Have a minimum of 3 years' experience surveying; with preference of 2 years experience in a crew chief position. AutoCAD experience ( preferred ).

Certification:
CT Land Surveyor license (LS), or the ability to obtain within 18 months, is required.
NOTE:
Incumbent grandfathered and not required to obtain a license.
Educational Requirements:
Graduation from high school or possession of high school equivalency diploma (GED) Associates or Bachelor's Degree in a related field is a preferred but not required Proficiency in MS Office products, and Google Workspace products Knowledge of Auto CAD, GIS, and Laserfiche preferred
