Job Title:
Survey Crew Chief Job Description The Survey Crew Chief leads a two-person survey crew and performs a wide range of field surveying activities for residential development and construction stakeout projects. This role requires a hands-on leader who can work independently, use Trimble equipment and software confidently, and ensure accurate, timely survey deliverables while moving efficiently from site to site each day. Responsibilities Lead a two-person survey crew in the field and ensure daily work is completed safely, accurately, and on schedule. Plan and execute field surveying tasks for residential development projects, including boundary, topographic, and construction stakeout surveys. Set up, operate, and troubleshoot Trimble survey equipment and use Trimble software to collect, manage, and verify field data. Perform construction stakeout for various site features, ensuring precise layout and adherence to project plans and specifications. Conduct topographic and land surveys, including ALTA and GPS-based surveys, and ensure that all measurements and records are accurate and complete. Coordinate daily work assignments by checking in at the office as needed and then traveling directly to project sites. Drive and maintain a company-provided survey truck, transporting equipment and crew to and from job sites responsibly. Communicate clearly with office staff, project teams, and crew members to clarify project requirements and resolve field issues. Train, guide, and support survey technicians working under your direction, helping them build skills and maintain high-quality standards. Document field work thoroughly, including notes, sketches, and digital records, to support drafting and final deliverables. Follow all safety procedures and best practices while working on active construction sites and in varied outdoor conditions. Essential Skills At least 2 years of experience independently leading survey crews in the field. Proficiency with Trimble survey equipment and Trimble software for data collection and layout. Hands-on experience with residential development projects, including construction stakeout. Strong background in land surveying, including topographic surveys and related fieldwork. Ability to perform GPS-based surveys and work with ALTA and other survey types as needed. Capability to work independently, manage daily tasks, and make sound decisions in the field. Valid driver's license and ability to responsibly operate a company vehicle between sites. Strong communication skills to coordinate with office staff, crew members, and project stakeholders. Ability to interpret construction plans, survey drawings, and technical documentation. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience mentoring or supporting survey technicians in the field. Broad understanding of surveying principles, including boundary, topographic, and construction surveying. Familiarity with topographic surveys, ALTA surveys, and land surveying best practices. Comfort working with GPS-based survey methods and related technology. Interest in professional growth with a small company that offers regular performance reviews and raise opportunities. Work Environment This position is primarily field-based, with most work performed on active job sites in the region from Seaford and south of Dover to the Maryland line. You will typically report to the office as needed to receive assignments and then travel directly to project sites in a company-provided truck, which you will take home and use to go straight to the field each day. The role involves extensive outdoor work in varying weather and site conditions, including construction environments and undeveloped land. The company operates as a small, close-knit team and offers 3-month and 6-month performance reviews for potential raises, along with an annual review, providing regular feedback and opportunities for advancement. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Seaford, DE. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $30.00/hr.
