POSITION

Survey Crew Chief SUMMARY:

Supervises a survey crew and participates in skilled technical survey engineering work. It is distinguished from the Survey Instrument Person classification, which performs technical survey engineering work as a member of a survey crew. It is distinguished from the Survey Field Coordinator classification who primarily performs work requiring further instrumentation skills plus exercise of more complex administrative and supervisory duties, a Survey Technician classification, who primarily performs work requiring further software skills, and a professional land surveyor, who requires professional licensure.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

(Work assignments may vary depending on the office's needs and will be communicated to the applicant or incumbent by the supervisor.) Plans, organizes, assigns, reviews and participates in all phases of the work of an assigned survey crew; Supervises various types of surveys, such as Boundary Surveys, Topographic Surveys, Construction Surveys, ALTA/ACSM Land Title Surveys, and various other surveys professionally and efficiently; Researches and analyzes available information and data affecting proposed survey projects from a variety of sources, and then organizes required work to develop the required additional information; Recognizes any problems which may arise while in the field, and to notify the office and report conflicting issues as they occur; Understands the scope of work required before going to the work site, and to debrief the Field Coordinator and Office Staff at the end of each day of the work completed and the details of each project's work status; Utilizes the robotic and GPS equipment provided to perform the field work efficiently; helps train new field staff how to operate it, utilize, and maintain the survey equipment; and assist in the maintenance and inventory of the field truck, survey equipment, and field supplies. Trains survey crew in technical survey and safety methods, techniques and procedures; Performs survey calculations, before and after survey projects; Directs the implementation of needed worksite safety and traffic control procedures to assure safety of survey crews; Assigns work to, and evaluates performance of assigned staff; Keeps accurate notes, records and sketches of work performed and data secured in manual logs, records and forms and in computerbased systems.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS

Knowledge of:

Surveying principles, methods and techniques; Surveying equipment, its uses, operations and maintenance; Engineering construction methods, plans and specifications; Survey calculation techniques; Relevant jobsite and traffic control safety rules and regulations; Principles and techniques of employee supervision, training and evaluation; Specific Instruments or Data Collectors? PMI DrugFree Workplace Policy PMI Safety Policies and Procedures Skill in: Operating and maintaining all types of mechanical, optical and electronic survey equipment; Performing mathematical calculations requiring algebra, geometry and trigonometry. Interpreting construction plans and specifications, maps, plats and legal descriptions; Creating and maintaining precise and accurate field records, both manually and in computerbased systems; Communicating effectively, both orally and in writing; Creating and maintaining required activity logs and submitting routine, recurring and special reports to management; Directing, supervising, training and evaluating performance of assigned staff.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EITHER:

1. Three years of surveying field experience and one year of experience supervising and training technical staff performing land surveying (which may be concurrent with general experience). (Satisfactory completion of a construction surveying or elementary surveying course from an accredited college, vocational/technical school or military training may be substituted for two years of the required surveying experience.)

OR:

2. One year of experience with PMI as a Survey Instrumentation Technician.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

PMI has offices in different geographical locations. We workshare which may mean temporary assignments to other offices' projects that, in turn, may require travel. While we make every attempt to balance individuals' personal schedules, this travel may be unexpected and require weekend stays. This position requires up to 20% travel time outside of area and overnight. The travel may be for work-related duties or training.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Licenses and Certificates:

All positions require a valid Driver license at the time of application or prior to completion of initial/promotional probation. Failure to obtain/maintain the required licensure shall be grounds for termination.

DBIDS or Rapid Gate Pass:

All positions require access to federally owned bases and the ability to obtain a DBIDS or Rapid Gate Pass for entrance. This pass requires a background check. Drug Testing:

All positions may require drug testing for contract compliance. These requirements can be found in the Drug Free Workplace policy. Failure to pass a drug test shall be grounds for termination upon a second failure.

Physical/Sensory Requirements:

o All positions require the ability to work outdoors in extremes of heat, cold and inclement weather, with exposure to dust, dirt, wind, construction activities and materials, and to traverse rough terrain on foot. All positions may encounter harmful/poisonous wildlife and plant materials. oAll positions lift 25 pounds frequently and regularly lifts up to 50 pounds.
