Job Title:
Rodman / Survey Crew MemberJob Description This role offers a hands-on opportunity to join a dedicated survey crew and build a long-term career in surveying and Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE). As a Rodman, you support the Crew Chief in completing field surveys by performing heavy manual labor, operating equipment, and assisting with data collection in a variety of outdoor environments. This position is ideal for motivated individuals who enjoy working outside, are eager to learn the technical side of surveying, and want clear pathways for advancement into Survey or SUE Technician roles. Responsibilities + Assist the Crew Chief with all aspects of assigned field survey projects to ensure accurate and timely completion. + Transmit survey data to the appropriate files in the computer network and retrieve data needed for field use. + Clear lines of sight by cutting and clearing brush and trees from the survey line as directed. + Establish survey points and perform taping, chaining, and leveling activities accurately and efficiently. + Maintain the crew's assigned vehicle by keeping it clean, properly stocked with equipment and supplies, and reporting any mechanical or safety issues to the Crew Chief. + Load, unload, clean, and properly store field surveying equipment before and after use. + Communicate and coordinate effectively with other crew members to support safe, efficient, and accurate field operations. + Observe and follow all safety guidelines and procedures, especially when working around traffic or on active construction sites. + Accurately identify various types of trees encountered during field survey work when required for project documentation. + Assist in training entry-level rodmen by demonstrating proper techniques and safe work practices as requested. + Perform physically demanding tasks such as standing, walking, using hand tools and controls, reaching, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting or moving 50-75 pounds. + Support SUE work by performing heavy labor, including using a jackhammer, digging, setting up work sites, operating a vacuum truck, and performing site clean-up. + Contribute to a clean, organized, and safe work environment on job sites and in vehicles. + Travel with the crew to in-town and out-of-town project locations, including overnight stays during the week as needed. Essential Skills + Ability and willingness to perform heavy manual labor consistently throughout the workday. + Comfort working outdoors in extreme heat and varying weather conditions, particularly in Florida. + High school diploma or GED. + Valid driver's license with the ability to pass a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check. + Ability to lift 50 pounds or more and handle physical tasks such as digging, carrying equipment, and operating tools. + Experience working outside in Florida elements, such as construction, landscaping, or other outdoor manual labor roles. + Strong reliability, work ethic, and motivation to learn the surveying and SUE trades. + Ability to travel, including potentially extensive travel up to 5 days during the week, with overnight stays as required. + Willingness to work overtime as needed. + Ability to follow safety procedures and guidelines on active construction sites and near traffic. + Effective communication skills to coordinate with crew members and follow directions from the Crew Chief. Additional Skills & Qualifications + Previous utility locating or survey experience is a plus. + Background in construction, landscaping, concrete work, masonry, rod busting, or general labor is beneficial. + Ability to learn surveying concepts and progress into roles such as Instrument Operator, Survey Technician, or SUE Technician. + Familiarity with survey-related tasks such as taping, chaining, leveling, and utility locating is advantageous. + Interest in a long-term career in surveying or SUE, with a desire for professional growth and advancement. + Comfort working with cutting-edge survey and SUE technologies after training. + Strong sense of responsibility for maintaining equipment, vehicles, and tools in good working order. Work Environment You will work as part of a 2-3 person survey crew based out of a field office, primarily outdoors in the extreme Florida elements, including high heat and varying weather conditions. The typical workday starts by reporting to the office at 6:00 a.m., then traveling in the crew truck to job sites and working until approximately 4:00-5:00 p.m., with overtime frequently available and paid at 1.5x. The role involves extensive fieldwork, heavy manual labor, and the use of tools and equipment such as hand tools, jackhammers, and vacuum trucks, as well as modern survey and SUE technologies. Travel is a regular part of the job, including out-of-town assignments with potential overnight stays Monday through Thursday, returning on Friday; lodging and per diem are provided, and projects may extend within a broad regional radius. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Gainesville, FL. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $16.00 - $17.00/hr.
