Job Title:
Rodman / Survey Crew Member Job Description This entry-level field position supports land surveying and Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) crews by performing physically demanding outdoor work and assisting the Crew Chief with all aspects of field surveys. The role offers strong job stability, significant overtime opportunities, and a clear path for advancement into Survey or SUE Technician roles for motivated, reliable individuals who want to build a long-term career in surveying and utility locating. Responsibilities Assist the Crew Chief with all assigned field survey tasks to ensure projects are completed accurately and on schedule. Transmit survey data to the appropriate files in the computer network and acquire data needed for field use. Clear lines of sight for surveys by cutting and removing brush and trees along the survey line. Accurately and efficiently establish points, tape, chain, and level for field survey projects as directed by the Crew Chief. Keep the crew's assigned vehicle clean, properly maintained, and stocked with necessary equipment and supplies, and promptly report any mechanical or safety issues to the Crew Chief. Load, transport, clean, and properly store all field surveying equipment used by the crew. Communicate and coordinate effectively with other crew members to support timely and accurate completion of field work. Follow all safety guidelines and procedures, especially when working around traffic, utilities, or active construction sites. Accurately identify various types of trees encountered during field survey work when required by the project. Assist in training entry-level rodmen and new crew members as requested by the Crew Chief. Perform heavy physical labor, including standing, walking, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting or moving 50-75 pounds on a regular basis. When supporting SUE work, perform heavy labor such as using a jackhammer, digging test holes, setting up sites, operating or assisting with vacuum truck operations, and completing thorough site clean-up. Work effectively in outdoor environments, including extreme Florida heat and weather conditions, while maintaining productivity and safety. Travel with the crew for out-of-town projects, including overnight stays during the week, and adhere to all travel and lodging procedures. Essential Skills High school diploma or GED. Ability and willingness to perform heavy manual labor on a daily basis. Ability to work outdoors in extreme heat and varying weather conditions. Capability to stand, walk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and lift or move 50-75 pounds regularly. Valid driver's license with the ability to pass a motor vehicle record (MVR) check. Willingness to work overtime as needed, including 5-15 hours of overtime per week. Willingness to travel for out-of-town work, including potential extensive travel up to 5 days during the week with overnight stays. Ability to follow safety procedures and work safely around traffic, utilities, and active construction sites. Strong work ethic, reliability, and motivation to learn the technical aspects of surveying and SUE. Ability to work effectively as part of a 2-3 person crew and communicate clearly with team members. Additional Skills & Qualifications Previous experience in construction, landscaping, masonry, concrete work, or other manual labor roles. Experience working outdoors in Florida weather conditions. Prior surveying, utility locating, or related field experience, including roles such as survey laborer, rod buster, mason, or general laborer. Ability and interest in learning surveying and SUE techniques and equipment. Comfort using tools such as jackhammers and working around vacuum trucks and other heavy equipment. Desire for a long-term career with opportunities for advancement into Survey or SUE Technician roles. Strong sense of responsibility for equipment care, vehicle cleanliness, and jobsite organization. Performance-driven mindset with interest in earning raises based on contribution and growth. Work Environment This role works as part of a 2-3 person field crew based out of a local office, with daily work performed outdoors in a variety of locations across Florida. The work environment involves exposure to extreme Florida elements, including high heat, humidity, sun, and inclement weather. Typical hours include reporting to the office at approximately 6:00 a.m., riding in the crew truck to the jobsite, and working in the field until around 4:00-5:00 p.m., with overtime commonly required and compensated at an overtime rate. The position requires frequent heavy lifting, use of hand tools and power tools such as jackhammers, and working around traffic, construction sites, and utility infrastructure. Crews use survey instruments, field data collection equipment, and vacuum trucks when supporting SUE operations. Out-of-town work is a regular part of the job, with travel generally Monday through Thursday and return on Friday; lodging and per diem are provided, and project locations may extend several hours from the home office. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Gainesville, FL. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $16.00 - $17.00/hr.
