Full-TimePosition SummaryThe Survey Crew Chief is responsible for leading and performing field surveying operations in support of land development, transportation, and infrastructure projects. This role oversees survey crews, ensures accurate data collection, maintains equipment, and coordinates with project managers to complete work safely, efficiently, and according to project specifications.
Key ResponsibilitiesLead and supervise daily field survey operations, including boundary, topographic, construction staking, ALTA/NSPS, and as-built surveysOperate survey instruments and equipment such as total stations, GPS/GNSS receivers, data collectors, and levelsInterpret plans, plats, legal descriptions, and project specifications to execute field work accuratelyEnsure proper setup, calibration, and maintenance of surveying equipmentMaintain accurate field notes, sketches, and electronic data for transfer to the officeCoordinate with project managers, engineers, and clients regarding field activities and schedulesMonitor crew productivity and ensure projects are completed on time and within scopeEnforce safety procedures and company policies on all job sitesTrain and mentor instrument operators and field crew membersIdentify and troubleshoot field issues and report discrepancies to the project teamRequired QualificationsHigh school diploma or GED required; associate degree in surveying, civil engineering, or related field preferredMinimum of 3-5 years of progressive experience in land surveying, including crew leadershipStrong working knowledge of survey principles, procedures, and equipmentProficiency with GPS/GNSS and conventional survey methodsAbility to read and interpret construction plans, plats, and legal descriptionsValid driver's license with a clean driving recordAbility to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and terrainStrong organizational, communication, and leadership skillsPreferred QualificationsIndiana Surveyor Intern (SI) certification or ability to obtainExperience working on transportation, municipal, or commercial development projectsFamiliarity with data collection and surveying software (e.g., Trimble, Carlson, Leica, AutoCAD Civil 3D field workflows)Physical RequirementsAbility to lift and carry survey equipment up to 50 poundsAbility to walk long distances over uneven terrainAbility to stand, bend, stoop, and work outdoors for extended periodsWork EnvironmentCombination of fieldwork and limited office interactionWork performed on active construction sites, roadways, and undeveloped propertiesOccasional overtime may be required to meet project schedules
