Position Overview:
The Survey Party Chief leads field survey crews to collect accurate land and construction data, translate design and legal documents into fieldwork, and ensure timely, compliant deliverables for residential, subdivision, and development projects. This role coordinates directly with licensed surveyors (PLS), engineers, contractors, and clients, manages field safety and equipment, and provides clear, organized field records and data for office processing.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead and supervise field survey crews, assigning tasks and ensuring crew productivity, safety, and professional conduct. Plan and execute boundary, topographic, ALTA, subdivision, residential, and construction layout surveys in accordance with industry standards and client requirements. Set up and operate survey instruments including GNSS/GPS, total stations, levels, and data collectors; verify and maintain control points and benchmarks. Interpret legal descriptions, plats, engineering plans, and as-built information to establish field procedures and stakeout lines. Collect, verify, and document accurate field notes, measurements, and observations; ensure data integrity and completeness for transfer to office staff or PLS review. Coordinate with licensed Professional Land Surveyors (PLS), engineers, project managers, and clients to resolve field issues and confirm deliverable requirements. Train, mentor, and evaluate crew members; enforce safety protocols and maintain compliance with site-specific and OSHA safety standards. Maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot field equipment; manage equipment inventory and ensure proper storage and transport. Prepare daily field reports, timesheets, equipment logs, and other documentation; communicate progress and issues to project leads. Support post-field processing by providing organized field data and notes for CAD/CAD Civil 3D drafting, survey calculations, and final plat preparation.
Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent; Associate degree or certificate in Surveying Technology, Geomatics, or related field preferred. 5+ years of progressive field surveying experience with demonstrable leadership or party chief responsibilities; experience with land, residential, subdivision, development, and construction surveys. Familiarity working with or under a licensed PLS; PLS license is a plus. Proficient with GNSS/GPS, total stations, digital levels, and data collectors (e.g., Trimble, Leica); capable of basic field instrument troubleshooting and calibration. Working knowledge of survey software and workflows (data collectors, Carlson, Trimble Business Center, AutoCAD/Civil 3D or equivalent). Ability to read and interpret legal descriptions, plats, engineering plans, and construction documents. Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills; ability to coordinate with clients, engineers, and contractors. Valid drivers license, reliable transportation, and willingness to travel to job sites; ability to work outdoors in variable weather and perform physical tasks (lifting, walking uneven terrain). Knowledge of local and state survey regulations, boundary law fundamentals, and industry best practices; commitment to quality control and safety.
