Job Description

Job SummaryA multidisciplinary engineering, planning, and design firm is seeking a Director of Land Surveying to lead and expand its survey practice supporting a diverse portfolio of public and private sector projects across the United States. This role is responsible for technical leadership, operational management, staff development, and strategic growth of the land surveying group.

The survey practice supports complex site development efforts including parks and recreation facilities, sports complexes and athletic fields, large institutional and campus environments, industrial and commercial developments, and public infrastructure projects. The Director will play a hands‑on role overseeing technical excellence while building long‑term client relationships and positioning the survey group for continued growth within an integrated civil, planning, and landscape architecture platform.

Key ResponsibilitiesProvide overall leadership and direction for the land surveying group, including technical oversight, staffing, workload management, and quality control.

Serve as survey principal in charge for a wide range of projects including sports and recreation facilities, athletic fields, park and open space developments, institutional campuses, industrial facilities, and large mixed‑use sites.

Oversee boundary, ALTA, topographic, right‑of‑way, and construction surveys in support of multidisciplinary site development projects.

Manage survey deliverables including plats, legal descriptions, control networks, and mapping products to meet client and agency requirements.

Coordinate closely with civil engineering, land planning, and landscape architecture teams to deliver integrated site solutions.

Lead QA and QC processes for field observations, network adjustments, CAD production, and final survey submissions.

Develop and mentor survey staff, including project managers, licensed surveyors, technicians, and field crews.

Participate in recruiting, hiring, and long‑term talent development for the survey group.

Support business development activities including client relationship management, proposal development, and pursuit strategy.

Assist in expanding the firm's survey services across public sector, parks and recreation, and private development markets nationwide.

Foster a collaborative, client‑focused, and technically rigorous culture within the survey team.

QualificationsBachelor's degree in Surveying, Geomatics, or a related field preferred. Equivalent experience considered.

Licensed Professional Land Surveyor in Virginia is required.12 or more years of progressive land surveying experience, including leadership or group management responsibility.

Demonstrated experience delivering survey services for complex site development projects such as parks, recreational facilities, athletic fields, institutional campuses, industrial developments, and public infrastructure.

Strong technical background in boundary analysis, ALTA surveys, control surveys, and survey coordination on multidisciplinary projects.

Proficiency with industry‑standard survey and CAD software.

Proven ability to manage multiple projects, clients, and deadlines simultaneously.

Strong communication, organizational, and leadership skills.

Ability to work collaboratively across disciplines while also leading independent survey initiatives.
