The Opportunity WSDOT is currently seeking a Survey Party Lead (Transportation Engineer 2) to join the Olympic Region Right of Way (ROW) Plans & Design Support Office, providing critical site and cadastral survey support to advance transportation projects. In this role, you will apply standard engineering principles to support ROW acquisitions and the delivery of construction, preservation, and Fish Barrier Removal projects in alignment with agency policies and regulations. This position serves as a survey party lead, directing field activities and supporting the development of technical staff. Work is performed with a high degree of independence under general guidance, with an emphasis on quality, safety, and stewardship. The successful candidate will also contribute to a respectful, inclusive workplace that supports WSDOT's mission and long-term resilience goals. What to Expect Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Survey Party Lead will: Lead and coordinate survey party activities by planning, prioritizing, assigning, and reviewing work to ensure timely and accurate completion. Provide technical instruction, training, and mentoring to survey staff on surveying practices, equipment use, and safety procedures. Plan and schedule survey requests, determine data collection needs, and serve as a point of contact with the public and contractors. Perform field surveying tasks using manual and electronic methods, including alignment control, location surveys, and topographic data collection. Operate and oversee the use, maintenance, calibration, and inspection of survey equipment such as total stations, GPS/RTK systems, and levels. Promote and enforce safety standards by implementing safety protocols, supporting PASPs, and maintaining a safe work environment for staff and the public. Prepare, review, and ensure compliance of Right of Way plans, Records of Survey, and related documents using CADD and other tools. Conduct records research, interpret property and title information, perform boundary calculations, and respond to inquiries from internal and external partners. Qualifications To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

Surveying and Engineering Knowledge:

Comprehensive knowledge and practical understanding of surveying and engineering principles, methods, and practices relevant to transportation projects.

Right of Way Knowledge:

Foundational knowledge of Right of Way surveying and documentation. Skills to develop and review Survey and Right of Way plans for compliance with Departmental and Statutory standards.

Technology Proficiency:

Proficient in operating Windows-based computers and MS Office applications, including Excel, Outlook, SharePoint, and Word, as well as databases and computer-aided engineering software.

Communication Skills:

Skills to communicate technical information effectively and professionally to a diverse audience, including those with non-technical backgrounds, virtually, by phone, and in person.

Collaboration and Adaptability:

Skills to work productively both independently and a part of a team environment, prioritizing workload and handling multiple assignments, producing accurate and consistent results.

Takes action to meet the needs of others. In addition to the above, the following are also required: A valid driver's license and the ability to operate state-owned vehicles. Ability to traverse rough, steep, and uneven terrain. Ability to maneuver and transport various materials and/or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. It is preferred that qualified candidates also demonstrate: Demonstrates professional competency in land surveying practices as evidenced by possession of a Land Surveyor in Training (LSIT) certificate or Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) license. Certification as a Certified Survey Technician through the National Society of Professional Surveyors. Important Notes This recruitment may also be used to fill additional positions per business needs. This position is not eligible for remote work. Field work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions, including day and night, and is expected daily. Duties require working on rough or uneven terrain, performing tasks at or near ground level, and standing for extended periods. The role includes exposure to highway environments, traffic, construction activities, environmental conditions, and outdoor elements in both urban and natural settings. In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.
