Description At Ports America, the Safety & Sustainability Intern supports the execution of the company's environmental, safety, and sustainability strategy. Working closely with the Environment & Sustainability team, this role provides hands-on experience in environmental compliance, workplace safety, and sustainability initiatives across port operations. This internship is designed to provide real-world exposure to environmental and safety programs, data tracking, and continuous improvement efforts within a dynamic maritime and logistics environment.
Essential Duties:
Assist in the development and implementation of safety and sustainability programs, policies, training, and awareness campaigns. Support environmental compliance efforts by helping track regulatory requirements and maintaining documentation. Participate in safety inspections, audits, and incident reviews alongside internal stakeholders. Assist in collecting, tracking, and reporting sustainability metrics such as waste, energy, and water usage. Support initiatives focused on reducing environmental impact, including decarbonization and resource efficiency projects. Help prepare reports, presentations, and communications related to safety and sustainability performance. Collaborate with operations teams to promote a strong safety culture and environmental awareness. Assist with research on industry best practices, regulations, and sustainability trends. Support internal ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) initiatives and related data collection efforts. Participate in field visits and gain exposure to port operations and safety practices. Perform other duties as assigned.Basic Qualifications:
Currently enrolled as a student at an accredited college or university and Pursuing a degree in Environmental Science, Sustainability, Occupational Health & Safety, Engineering, or a related fieldPreferred Qualifications:
GPA of 2.5 or higher Excellent judgment and proven leadership ability Strong communication skills Enthusiasm and eagerness to learn Knowledge of safety and accident prevention codes and regulations Strong computer skills (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) Knowledge and understanding of cargo stowage and stability. Knowledge of and commitment to safety and accident prevention, safety codes and regulations, and related industry governmental regulations.Working Conditions:
Climb up and down a ladder on a vessel multiple times within a shift Must be able to work in extreme outdoor temperatures, dusty conditions, and occasionally high levels of noise. Work in an environment that may be hazardous to persons unable to see and hear fast moving equipment. Lift, push, and/or pull up to 30lbs.
