The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF), Data Modernization & Innovation Office (DMIO) is looking an Engineering Assistant 2/3 to support and expand our Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and Road Weather Information Systems (RWIS) statewide. This role blends engineering, data, and real-world operations to improve safety and decision-making across Alaska's transportation network to help us Keep Alaska Moving!Base Salary Information:
Engineering Assistant 2: $38.91/Hour (OT Eligible) Engineering Assistant 3: $44.49/Hour (OT Eligible) What you will be doing: Monitor and support daily operations of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and Road Weather Information Systems (RWIS) systems across Alaska. Help manage field devices including cameras, sensors, and communication systems. Incorporate new data sources to improve system performance, situational awareness, and traveler information. Support deployment of new technologies that enhance safety and operational awareness. Coordinate with maintenance, safety, and IT teams to ensure systems effectively support the traveling public. Contribute to expanding statewide capabilities that support winter operations, incident response, and traveler information (e.g., 511). Who we are looking for: To be successful in this position, the selected applicant will possess the following core competencies:Engineering and Technology:
Knowledge of engineering concepts, principles, and practices, and of equipment, tools, mechanical devices, and their uses to produce motion, light, power, technology, and other applications.Transportation Engineering:
Knowledge of the concepts, principles, theories, and methods applicable to planning, designing, and constructing of transportation systems including traffic analysis, signal analysis, highway capacity, pavement design, bridge construction, planning of transportation projects, environmental analysis of transportation facilities, and transportation network analysis.Problem Solving:
(•) Identifies problems; determines accuracy and relevance of information; uses sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives, and to make recommendations.Information Technology Program Management:
Knowledge of the principles, methods, and tools for the coordinated management of an IT program to include providing oversight of multiple IT projects, integrating dependent schedules and deliverables, and related activities (for example, benefits management, life cycle management, program governance). Special note: A valid driver's license is required. Minimum Qualifications Engineering Assistant 2 Bachelor's degree, or the equivalent with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from an institution accredited by ABET. AND One year of entry level engineering, architectural or land surveying experience as an Engineering Assistant 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsew.Or:
A bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from an institution not accredited by ABET. AND An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or Land Surveyor-In-Training (LSIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors; or verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) examination. AND One year of entry level engineering, architectural or land surveying experience as an Engineering Assistant 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsew.Or:
Five years of progressively responsible subprofessional engineering experience of which two years was as a Journey level Engineering Technician or Drafting Technician 3 with the State of Alaska, or the equivalent elsew.Substitution:
Graduate study in engineering and/or architecture may be substituted for the required experience as an Engineering Assistant 1. (2 semester/3 quarter hours equal one month of experience).Special Note:
The employing department will identify Engineering-In-Training (EIT) positions. Transcripts which indicate the credit hours earned for the specific coursework may be requested at the time of interview or prior. Engineering Assistant 3 Bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from an institution accredited by ABET. AND Two years of engineering, architectural or land surveying experience of which one year was at the working or intermediate trainee level. The specific experience includes such work as an Engineering Assistant 2 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsew.Or:
A bachelor's degree with a major in a branch of engineering from an institution not accredited by ABET. AND An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors; or verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination. AND Two years of engineering, architectural or land surveying experience of which one year was at the working or intermediate trainee level. The specific experience includes such work as an Engineering Assistant 2 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsew.Substitutions:
Four years of any combination of ABET accredited postsecondary education in engineering, architecture, or land surveying (3 semester/4 quarter hours equal one month) and/or engineering, architectural or land surveying experience may substitute for the required degree. Graduate study in engineering or architecture may be substituted for the required experience (2 semester/3 quarter hours equal one month).
