Engineering Co-Op Intern - PT

This position will support staff in Madison County Public Works and Madison County Water Department. Work will include the application of basic technical principles, theories, and standards in support of analysis, design, and construction projects. Projects will primarily be in support of the Public Works Department, including transportation projects, traffic studies, plan review, stormwater structure surveys, pavement assessments, and stormwater/drainage inspections. Support may also be provided to the Madison County Water Department, including data analysis, field data collection, construction management, plan and specification review, and design of projects (e.g. water mains). Tasks and duties will include collection of data, various inspections, reading/preparing design drawings and technical specifications, performing calculations, and conducting engineering evaluations. This position requires routine verbal and email coordination with other departments, engineers, contractors, and property owners. (All duties listed may not be included in any one position nor does the list include all tasks found in a position of this class.) Collect stormwater infrastructure data (e.g. culverts, inlets, detention ponds) and update the County's GIS asset database Assist in pavement assessment data collection Conduct ADA compliance reviews and inspections for public improvements (sidewalks, ramps, etc.) Preparation of construction drawings (site layout, grading plan, erosion control plans, etc.) using AutoCAD and/or Civil3D Prepare and analyze data to support decision making and reporting for water distribution projects, traffic and transportation, stormwater management, etc. Assist in preparing cost estimates, bid packages, and technical specifications for roadway and water distribution projects Inspection of on-going construction projects Help review subdivision plans in accordance with Madison County Subdivision Regulations. Respond to drainage and/or traffic complaints and coordinate with other departments to perform work Contribute to the development of departmental standards and specifications such as permit forms, CAD standards, and updating standard drawings. Education and Experience Must be currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in Engineering (concentration in Civil or Environmental preferred), Construction Management, Geographic Information Science (GIS) or related fields and completed freshman year. Previous civil engineering intern or co-op experience is a plus. Knowledge, Skill, and Ability Candidates should have a general interest in Civil Engineering and have a willingness to learn. This position requires basic computer and software skills to complete work tasks, such as the use of Microsoft Office. Experience in analytical and design software, including AutoCAD, Civil3D, and/or ArcGIS experience is a plus. Ability to work on project teams and individual assignments. Physical Requirements Must be physically capable of working outdoors in all weather conditions, including adverse weather. Must be able to see well enough to operate motor vehicles and/or other equipment. Must be able to hear well enough to communicate with other workers and supervisors, both by phone and in person. This position may require occasional lifting of up to 25 lbs. Certifications or Licenses Required Must have a valid driver's license and a driving record acceptable for Madison County automobile insurance coverage.
