The Research Engineer uses fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures of a particular field of specialization to perform varied scientific research requiring application and adaptation of established techniques, procedures, and criteria. Evaluates, selects, and applies standard scientific techniques, procedures, and criteria to accomplish a variety of research assignments. Performs various research projects to include conducting experiments, writing research proposals, writing technical papers and research reports. ditionalDepartment Summary:
Performs high-level research with faculty in the Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering and affiliated transportation research programs. Research functions include, but are not limited to, research design, data collection, data analysis, modeling, simulation, visualization, software and tool development, experimental validation, and dissemination efforts. Collaborates with faculty, researchers, staff, and students from various academic and research units across the University, as well as with external organizations. Leads and supports research activities in transportation systems engineering (e.g., intelligent transportation systems), with emphasis on transportation safety, traffic operations, connected and automated transportation systems, transportation data analytics, resilient and emerging transportation technologies, and transportation cyber-physical systems. Contributes to the development and evaluation of transportation methods, models, and technologies to improve system performance, safety, efficiency, and resilience. Writes proposals with internal and external collaborators to secure research funding. Supports the management of funded projects. Contributes to technical reporting and dissemination. Mentors student researchers in support of the department's research mission.Required Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree and two (2) years of research experience; OR master's degree and some research experience.Skills and Knowledge:
Expertise in transportation systems engineering, intelligent transportation systems, data analysis, modeling and simulation, transportation cybersecurity, experimental research methods, and technical communication. Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research, prepare technical reports and scholarly publications, and contribute to proposal development and funded research activities.Preferred Qualifications:
Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related field. Demonstrated record of peer-reviewed publications, proposal development, and participation in externally funded research. Experience in transportation safety, traffic operations, intelligent transportation systems, connected and automated transportation systems, transportation cybersecurity, transportation data analytics, digital twin technologies, or transportation cyber-physical systems.Background Investigation Statement:
